I'd like to upgrade my son's laptop to 801 ac.  I know I can access the wifi card easily, but don't know if I can actually upgrade it.  It looks as though there's only a single antenna lead connected to the current a/b/g/n card.  Guidance would be greatly appreciated.

Hi:

Unfortunately, you can't upgrade to any dual band wifi card with only one antenna present.

All dual band wifi cards require that two antennas be connected to the antenna terminals on the wifi card.

Unless you are willing and able to disassemble the entire notebook including the display panel area to run a second antenna, it can't be done.

You may just want to purchase an external USB dual band AC wifi adapter.

Thanks, Paul.  That was my assumption.  I'll put a nano USB adapter on it, which seems to work for one of our older laptops at home.  I'll get a little faster one for him, but his school network should be pretty goo.
