It is so hard to plud the cable in and take out due to the clip cover, if that is its purpose. It used to connect to router automatically, but I have to disconnect and reconnect to get the square box symbol down the bottom right corner instead of wifi symbol. It's a new laptop so I wanted the increased speed to download and reinstall Apps. Help ?

Yes, the "clip cover" can make it more difficult to connect and then disconnect the RJ45 Ethernet cable.
Try a different cable that doesn't have that irritating appendage.
The actual issue might be why the Ethernet connection is disconnecting in the first place.
Some of the places to check:
- If the constant removal and attaching of the RJ45 Ethernet cable in the Ethernet port has damaged the port, the connection can be lost whenever the cable moves - this is possible.
- If you are using DHCP to connect to the router, the "lease" might be failing to maintain its connection - this is unlikely.
- If you are using DHCP to connect to the router, and if there is another device already using the selected IP address, a conflict will develop and throw one device off the network - this is unlikely.
- If you are using an assigned IP address for your computer and another device has also been assigned that address, a conflict will develop and at least one - perhaps both - devices will be thrown off the network - this is possible.
- If the RJ45 Ethernet cable is defective, then it will not maintain a connection - this is possible.
- If you are using a dual band router and the SSID (network names) for both 2.4Ghz and 5GHz are the same, some network connections might disconnect / connect unexpectedly - this is possible though it is normally result of using Wireless and not Wired.
Connection - Network - Static IP
Log into your router - set the IP address for your computer within the range selected for these types of devices.
Log into your computer - set the IP address for your computer to the same IP address as you selected / set on the router.
Control Panel > icon view > Network and Sharing Center
Click on your Ethernet connection
Check / Set the IPv4 Properties
Network_Connection_Wired_IP_1
Frankly, based on your description it is most likely the first one - that is, the port or the cable are loose.
Start by replacing the Ethernet cable.
Next, decide whether the issue is connection type (how you are managing the connections in the network).
If you decide the damage is physical, contact HP Support and ask for options.
