Hi @torinotbarbie,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
Troubleshooting connectivity issues with public Wi-Fi can sometimes be challenging, but there are several steps you can take to try and resolve the problem. Here are some suggestions you can follow.
- Verify the Wi-Fi network: Ensure that the public Wi-Fi network you're trying to connect to is operational and accessible to the public. Sometimes networks may require authentication or have time restrictions.
- Check signal strength: Make sure you are within range of the Wi-Fi signal. Weak signal strength can cause connection problems. Move closer to the Wi-Fi router or access point if possible.
- Restart your laptop: Restarting your laptop can sometimes resolve temporary software glitches that may be affecting the Wi-Fi connection.
- Forget and reconnect to the network: Open the network settings on your laptop and "forget" the problematic Wi-Fi network. Then, search for available networks again and reconnect to the network you want to join. This can help refresh the connection settings.
- Disable and re-enable Wi-Fi: In the network settings of your laptop, disable the Wi-Fi connection, wait a few seconds, and then re-enable it. This can also help refresh the connection.
- Update Wi-Fi drivers: Outdated or incompatible Wi-Fi drivers can cause connectivity issues. Visit the support website of your laptop manufacturer and download the latest Wi-Fi drivers for your specific laptop model. Install the drivers and see if it improves the situation.
- Clear network cache: Clearing the network cache on your laptop can sometimes resolve connectivity problems. Open the Command Prompt as an administrator, then type the following command and press Enter: ipconfig /flushdns. Restart your laptop and try connecting to the Wi-Fi network again.
- Disable firewall or security software: Temporarily disable any firewall or security software on your laptop and check if you can connect to the public Wi-Fi network. Sometimes, these programs can interfere with network connections.
Remember to prioritize your online security and be cautious when connecting to public Wi-Fi networks. Use a VPN (Virtual Private Network) service if available to encrypt your internet traffic and protect your data.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
