Hi @AJMon,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
To resolve the issue of your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw not printing from your laptop, follow these troubleshooting steps.
Check Printer Connection
- USB Connection: Ensure the USB cable is properly connected between the printer and your laptop. Try using a different USB port.
- Network Connection: If the printer is connected via Wi-Fi, make sure both your printer and laptop are connected to the same network. Check the printer’s Wi-Fi connection status.
Restart Devices
- Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
- Restart Laptop: Restart your laptop to refresh the connection.
Reinstall Printer Drivers
- Uninstall Old Drivers:
- Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
- Right-click on your printer and select Remove device.
- Install Latest Drivers:
- Go to the HP Support website.
- Search for your printer model (HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw).
- Download and install the latest drivers for your operating system.

Add Printer Manually
- Windows:
- Go to Settings > Devices > Printers & scanners.
- Click on Add a printer or scanner.
- If your printer is not found, click on The printer that I want isn't listed.
- Follow the prompts to manually add your printer.
- Mac:
- Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
- Click on the + button to add a new printer.
- Select your printer from the list.
Check Print Spooler Service (Windows)
- Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
- Find Print Spooler in the list and double-click it.
- Ensure the service is running. If not, click Start.
- Set the startup type to Automatic.
Check Firewall/Antivirus Settings
- Ensure that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the printer software or connection.
Update Firmware
- Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP website and update it if necessary.
Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)
- Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This tool can diagnose and fix many common issues.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
