Hi @AJMon,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

To resolve the issue of your HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw not printing from your laptop, follow these troubleshooting steps.

Check Printer Connection

  • USB Connection: Ensure the USB cable is properly connected between the printer and your laptop. Try using a different USB port.
  • Network Connection: If the printer is connected via Wi-Fi, make sure both your printer and laptop are connected to the same network. Check the printer’s Wi-Fi connection status.

Restart Devices

  • Restart Printer: Turn off the printer, wait for about 10 seconds, and then turn it back on.
  • Restart Laptop: Restart your laptop to refresh the connection.

Reinstall Printer Drivers

  • Uninstall Old Drivers:
    1. Go to Control Panel > Devices and Printers.
    2. Right-click on your printer and select Remove device.
  • Install Latest Drivers:
    1. Go to the HP Support website.
    2. Search for your printer model (HP Color LaserJet Pro MFP M281fdw).

    2. Click on Add a printer or scanner.
    3. If your printer is not found, click on The printer that I want isn't listed.
    4. Follow the prompts to manually add your printer.
  • Mac:
    1. Go to System Preferences > Printers & Scanners.
    2. Click on the + button to add a new printer.
    3. Select your printer from the list.

Check Print Spooler Service (Windows)

  1. Press Win + R, type services.msc, and press Enter.
  2. Find Print Spooler in the list and double-click it.
  3. Ensure the service is running. If not, click Start.
  4. Set the startup type to Automatic.

Check Firewall/Antivirus Settings

  • Ensure that your firewall or antivirus software is not blocking the printer software or connection.

Update Firmware

  • Check if there is a firmware update available for your printer on the HP website and update it if necessary.

Use HP Print and Scan Doctor (Windows)

  • Download and run the HP Print and Scan Doctor tool. This tool can diagnose and fix many common issues.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
