Asus Laptop refuses to hook up via direct active ether net cable (Spectrum). I've read and followed instructions here online but nothing works from the Win 10 laptop.. My Win 11 desktop however works fine with the HP 7300. What am I doing wrong?

I've downloaded all new drivers to the laptop this a.m. so it's not a driver issue.

Hi @Ann016,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

It sounds like your Asus laptop is not establishing a proper Ethernet connection, which is why it can’t communicate with the HP OfficeJet 7300 printer over the network, even though your Windows 11 desktop works fine. Here’s what’s likely happening and how to fix it:

Why This Happens

  • The printer is networked (wired or wireless), but your Asus laptop is failing to get a valid IP address via Ethernet.
  • Common causes:
    • A disabled Ethernet adapter or incorrect settings.
    • Driver mismatch (even if updated, sometimes chipset drivers need reinstall).
    • Network profile or firewall blocking local devices.
    • Cable or port issue (less likely since the desktop works fine).

Step-by-Step Fix

1. Check Ethernet Adapter Status

  • Press Win + X → Device Manager → Network adapters.
  • Confirm Realtek / Intel Ethernet Controller is enabled.
  • If disabled, right-click → Enable.

2. Verify IP Address

  • Press Win + R, type cmd, then: ipconfig /all
  • Look for Ethernet adapter
    • If IP shows 169.x.x.x, DHCP failed.
    • If blank, the adapter isn’t connecting.

3. Reset Network Settings

  • Settings > Network & Internet > Advanced network settings > Network reset.
  • Restart your laptop.

4. Manually Set IP (If DHCP Fails)

  • Go to Control Panel > Network and Sharing Center > Change adapter settings.
  • Right-click Ethernet → Properties > IPv4.
  • Set: IP: 192.168.1.50
                 Subnet: 255.255.255.0
                 Gateway: 192.168.1.1
                 DNS: 8.8.8.8

(Adjust based on your router’s IP range.)

5. Confirm Printer Connectivity

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!
