I have a Compaq Presario 700 laptop. It seems in working condition. It shows and plays downloaded music and I am able to navigate other areas of the system. Is it worth it to upgrade it is it possible to connect to the internet? the last time my daughter used it, we connected to the internet through dial up.

Thank you in advance for any information you can share!

Hi @RONN5,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand the Compaq Presario 700 is quite an old model, and its hardware might limit its ability to run modern software or connect to the internet effectively. Here are a few points to consider:

  • Upgrading: Upgrading such an old laptop can be challenging. It might be limited to hardware upgrades like adding more RAM or replacing the hard drive, but options for upgrading components will be constrained by the laptop's age and compatibility.
  • Internet Connectivity: If it used to connect to the internet via dial-up, it might not have built-in support for modern broadband connections like Wi-Fi or Ethernet. Here are some steps you could take if you want to connect it to the internet:
  • Dial-Up Modem: If you have a dial-up modem and a phone line, you can still use it to connect to the internet. However, dial-up is very slow compared to modern broadband options.
  • External USB Modem: Some external USB modems might work with older systems if they have compatible drivers. You could try finding one that supports your laptop’s operating system.
  • Network Adapters: For broadband connections, you might need to use an external USB Ethernet adapter if the laptop doesn't have built-in Ethernet support. However, finding compatible drivers for such old hardware can be difficult.
  • Software and Security: Modern websites and applications may not be compatible with very old operating systems. Additionally, security risks are higher for outdated systems, so be cautious about using the laptop for sensitive activities.
  • Alternative Uses: If the laptop is in good working condition, you might consider repurposing it for specific tasks, like offline media playback or as a retro computing project.
