Computer won’t connect to wifi at all

I got a hand me down computer today, and I’ve been setting it up. But when I try to connect, I get the message “can’t connect to network” without any explanation why. Any tutorials on how to fix this use either outdated updates with user interfaces I don’t have, or a setting I don’t have either. I just reset the computer so I could actually log in, so its basically a blank slate.
