Connected, but unidentified network and no internet access

I just received a brand new HP Pavilion dv7 Notebook PC. When I try to connect to my internet, it connects, but attempts to "identify" the connection for about 10 seconds then it says "Undentified network" and fails to have internet access. 2 other computers are connected to this network with no problem. I've tried resetting everything, and many other "fixes" for this exact problem from other forums. I even uninstalled Norton, but nothing seems to work.

I can connect directly to mine, and wirelessly with my neighbors, so I know the network card is okay.

Hi. I found the issue here. You IP is set to static. It means that it will only work on the network where it was previously assigned to like hotels, office, etc.

You need to change your Wireless card from having static IP to a DHCP or we could say automatic.

I've checked the IPv4 in Wireless Network Connection Properties, and it is actually set to automatic. Is there another way to check or change this?

I also tried uninstalling the network card and reinstalling it on a startup to no avail.

1. I have the same model of hardware. It is NOT a static IP address. I have tried everything suggested on the internet and on the HP support pages. I have tried resetting my router and changing settings.

This cannot be a coincidence. We are having the same problem and also have a HP Pavilion g7 with the Ralink RT5390R adapter and a Comcast router. As with you, we can connect to other routers and have no problem getting internet service. We can even add a second wireless router of much older vintage to the Comcast unit and connect to that and get internet service, and we can also connect to the same Comcast unit via RJ45 and get internet service, yet we still get the unidentified network problem with no internet service when connecting to the Comcast unit directly via wireless.

It seems to be some conbination of this Ralink adapter with the Comcast router. Are you also using the Comcast Xfinity SMC Networks SMCD3GNV modem/router unit?

Our next move is to try a USB wireless adapter and disable the internal adapter.

I also have a dv-7-7027 with the same network adapter and comcast internet but with a linksys wireless router and am having the exact issue with my connectivity. I am considering taking this computer back, if I cannot find a solution. Has anyone found one yet?

Ordered an external USB adapter, ran the software and plugged it in, went into devices and disabled the internal adapter. Problem solved, works perfect. It is simply the combination of this internal adapter and the Comcast router that is the problem. Since we like the notebook and don't have all day to argue the point with HP, it is much simpler and less time consuming to pick up an external adapter for under $20 (on Amazon) and use that.

This is a problem with the wireless adapter's roaming sensitivity.

 To fix this problem (Windows 7):

1. Open your network and sharing center

2. Click change adapter settings

3. Right click the connection with the Ralink adapter and select properties

4. Under the section that lists the name of the router it will say configure. Click configure.

5. Click the Advanced tab

6. Click Roaming Sensitivity and adjust it until you re-establish connection (I disabled my Roaming Sensitivity)

Thank you NojesOmega!! I have spend the last 5hours troubleshooting and doing everything everyone else has. Thank God I found this forum. I changed my adapter's roaming sensitivity and it finally fixed the problem (for now at least.) 

Everyone who has this problem (which seems to be every dv7 laptop owner), DEFINITELY disable the roaming sensitivity and your problems are solved!

I have had a similar problem when I reinstalled a new wireless card in my dv7, Intel n-1000.  It turned out I was too close to my router; close enough to use a short LAN cable.  When I moved to another room everything worked.
