Ok, so here's my problem: I have my laptop running Windows 10 Student Version off a clean boot from W7.

I bring my laptop to work everyday, and connect to a campus network. I would be able to get Gigabit speeds if I plugged in an ethernet cable; although when I do the computer does not recognize it.

I then went to my device manager and noticed I had no driver for LAN connection. I then tried going to the HP Driver support page and entered in my product information and tried downloading the correct driver. I was able to download the executable. When I tried to run it, I was delivered an error message stating an administrator has blocked me from running this app. I tried messing with the firewall settings but had no luck.

I need some guidance.

Thanks

Hello;

Allow me to welcome you to the HP forums!

Sorry to be the bearer of bad news, but the problem you're up against is that Microsoft only supplies drivers with the most basic functionality, and what you really need for FULL functionality is the specialized drivers written for the specific hardware found in your HP PC -- and unfortunately, there are no HP Win10 drivers for your PC.

This means that your PC is most likely NEVER going to be fully functional under Win10 because the drivers it needs for full functionality simply do not exist!

So basically, there are no HP Win10 drivers to download for your laptop.

Also, if you were connected to the school network when you tried to install drivers, do NOT do that -- as that network connection might seriously limit what you can do.  Only install drivers when you are using your laptop at home, connected to your own network.

Good Luck

Hi, @Greitz34 :

The only suggestion I can offer would be to install the W10 ethernet driver directly from Realtek for the model ethernet controller your notebook has.

Download, unzip and run the setup application from the 1st file on the list at the link below.

I tried your suggestion but ran into a road block. I ran the InstallShield Wizard but was prompted with an error upon finish. It indicated that "The Realtek Network Controller was not found. If Deep Sleep Mode is enabled Please Plug the Cable." I'm not entirely sure what to do next or just face that I won't be able to hard wire my laptop.

Hi:

Try a hard reset of your notebook and leave the battery out for about 15 minutes and see if that resolves the problem.

That worked for another forum member with the realtek ethernet controller when they got that message.

If that doesn't work, I don't have any other suggestions for you to try.
