HP Envy Touchsmart m7-J120Dx
Microsoft Windows 8.1 (32-bit)

Notebook dropped it's wifi connection a couple times yesterday. I got it back twice but can't anymore. Spent all morning fooling with it. Device manager says the adapter is enabled but when trying to connect the only option shown is for ethernet. No wifi "button" showing , not even greyed out.

I've refreshed the system, removed and reinstalled the card, unistalled/reinstalled driver, updated bios - basically tryed it all I think. The f12 indicator is orange and only toggles the airplane mode on/off. Finally I installed and ran the diagnostics software and it says the Wireless Module is "not installed".

I'm thinking the card is toast and needs to be replaced? Product is 4 years old.

Thanks for any advice!

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

It will be a relatively easy and fun project to do it yourself.

Should only take about 5 - 10 minutes.

I just put an Intel 7260 AC wifi card in my HP 350 G1 notebook upgrading it from a wireless N card.

I got it for less than $20 on eBay.

Works great, and when I have a strong signal, it connects at 866.7 MBPS.

Too bad I only have a 100 MBPS download package from my ISP.

Hi:

Yes, I would agree with your assessment.

The only other thing it could be would be the HMC wifi card slot has gone bad, which is unlikely.

Now that you have to replace the wifi card, you may as well upgrade from the Intel 3160, to the Intel 7260 AC card.

It will have double the connection speed.

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0                HP Part #710661-001

The card is readily available on Amazon or eBay.

Do your search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.

Here is the link to the service manual.  The wifi card R & R procedures can be found in chapter 5.

Thanks Paul. So in Device Manager under Network adapters. that Realtek PCle GBE Family Controller is just the software  that's controlling the card? It say the 'device" is working properly. Figure originally it was referring to the card itself...

You're very welcome.

The Realtek PCle GBE Family Controller is the wired (ethernet) adapter.

It has no bearing on why the wifi adapter quit working.

You should also be seeing an Intel 3160 AC wifi adapter listed there, and you don't.

So, the card is either dead (most likely), or the slot that powers it is dead (least likely).

Great, thanks again. I apparently know just enough to be dangerous, lol
