HP ProBook 4540s
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

I have been trying to use a wired internet connect but my computer will not connect to anything but Wi-Fi.

I have completed many troubleshooting steps.

When looking at my "Device Manager" I see:

  • Microsoft Virtual Wifi Miniport Adapter
  • Qualcomm Atheros AR9485 802.11 b/g/n Wifi Adapter

When looking under "Advanced Settings" of "Network Connections" I see:

  • Wireless Network Connection
  • Wireless Connection 2
  • [Remote Access connections}

I have installed the "Realtek Ethernet Controller Drivers sp63213" but this does not seem to make any difference.

Is there anyone that knows how to correct this as I am desperate to be able to connect via an Ethernet cable.

Thank you

@M_Square

Please download and install Realtek Ethernet Controller Drivers for Windows 7 (64 bit)

   https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp63001-63500/sp63213.exe

Hope this helps.

Regards.

Hi, @M_Square

If the ethernet device needed a driver, there would be a device showing up in the device manager labeled as an Ethernet Controller.

If you do not see such a device, then it is not a driver issue.

Do you have the notebook plugged in on A/C power?

There is a LAN power save mode in the BIOS that disables the ethernet adapter unless you are plugged in to A/C power.

You may also have to install the HP connection manager, restart the PC and turn on the ethernet adapter using the software controls.

This package provides the HP Connection Manager for the supported notebook models and operating systems.

@banhien

Thank you for the response. When I used this link, it asks if I would like to overwrite the file and when I click yes it says "Access Denied"

Is there a work around for this?

Thanks, @Pauk_tikkanen

The computer is plugged into A/C power and I am still unable to use the ethernet adapter.

I installed the HP Connection Manager, restarted the computer and tried to use the ethernet, still no success.

Under the diagnostics section of Connection Manager I see the Wireless LAN information and Bluetooth information but nothing listed under Wired LAN (Ethernet).

Any suggestions on how to proceed?

Thanks

You're very welcome.

The only other suggestion I can offer would be to check the BIOS settings and see if the ethernet adapter is present and enabled.

Since it is not showing up in the device manager, and it doesn't appear in the connection manager settings, and you have the notebook plugged into A/C power, the only other thing it could be is the ethernet chip on the motherboard has completely failed.

One other thing you can try is to do a hard reset of the PC and see if that gets the ethernet adapter to reappear.

See this link for how to do that.
