I got my HP Business Laptop last August.  The wireless has always been less than satisfactory.  I have 2 gig service, all my other devices are getting at least 600 MB down.  This laptop would rarely break 100 MB down and most times wallowed at a download speed less than 10 MB.  And it wouldn't stay connected for more than 30 minutes if left idle.

I have rebuilt the laptop three times, consulted with HP support, etc.  Nothing changed this situation.  Yesterday, I decided to visit the wireless vendor (Realtek) web site.  I found that there is a newer driver than the one installed and verified as newest via HP update functionality.  I installed it and that did the trick.  I am getting download speeds over 200 MB and the device stayed wirelessly connected overnight.

I am hoping this solves the problem.  Moral of the story:  don't take the internal updating service as unimpeachable.  If you're not getting the expected level of performance after going through all the customary motions, check the vendor web site - for all components that aren't up to snuff.
