Hi @TedPars,
Thank you for replying,
I appreciate your time and efforts,
As I understand you have already tried to reset the browser as well as tried uninstalling and reinstalling google chrome and still having the issue with the browser. Whereas other browsers are working fine, I would suggest the next step would be to create a new User account with administrator privileges.
I hope this helps.
Eagerly waiting for your response!
I hope you have a good day ahead,
And Feel free to ask your queries as this forum has some of the best people in the world available and ready to help.

Hi @TedPars,
Thank you for visiting the HP Forums! A great place where you can find solutions for your issues with help from the community! I came across your post and wanted to assist you. I understand you are having issues with the chrome browser. Don't worry as I have a few suggestions which should help you resolve this issue.
To provide you with an accurate solution, I’ll need a few more details:
Have you tried to reset the chrome browser?
Have you tried to update the drivers using HP Support Assistant?
Does the same issue also occur when you create a new Chrome user? If it doesn't , there may be something on the previous Chrome user (profile) that is causing the issue.
In the meantime, let's try these steps here:
Let's start off by performing a reset of the browser:
You can restore your browser settings in Chrome at any time. You might need to do this if apps or extensions you installed changed your settings without your knowledge. Your saved bookmarks and passwords won't be cleared or changed.
On your computer, open Chrome.
At the top right, click more - Settings.
At the bottom, click Advanved.
Under the Section "Reset," Click Reset.
Confirm by clicking Reset.
These steps won't provide a full reset. For example, some settings like fonts or accessibility won't be deleted. To create a new user profile, add a new user in chrome.
Next thing, I would suggest here is to download and install HP support assistant on your PC. It should automatically download and install the latest updates and drivers for your PC.
Refer this link to know how to use HP support assistant.
Let me know if those steps worked for you.
If they did, that’s awesome!
Give us some reinforcement by clicking the solution and kudos buttons,
That’ll help us and others see that we’ve got the answers!
Good Luck.

Thank you Jeet_Singh for your suggestions.
I have tried various things so far:
Because of the error message I uninstalled HP Support Assitant and then I reinstalled it again - no difference except that the HP Check Launcher message no longer appears.
When I click settings I can't get to Advanced because all I have is a black screen. If I click any of the favourites on the toolbar nothing happens. No matter what I do I still get a black screen.
When I try to set up a new Chrome user all I get is a white subscreen!
With the help of a friend I did a complete uninstall of Chrome. First as a normal uninstall and then with Revo uninstaller.
On downloading Chrome again there is absolutely no difference. Still just a black screen.

I realised that my uninstall of Google Chrome was not total as my favourites were still at the top of the screen. However of course I couldn't access them or, importantly, do anything with Settings because of the black screen.
I then totally uninstalled Chrome using Revo Uninstaller, ensuring during this process that all references of any kind to Chrome were deleted. On re-installing, Chrome was fine. No favourites but fortunately before uninstalling I had imported them to Firefox and then imported them back again.
Since then I have disabled hardware acceleration (using Settings) just in case that was the cause of the problem.
