F7X83EA#ABU (HP 225 G2)
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hi folks

I have a HP 225 G2 and I've just replaced the HDD. I'm running Windows 8.1, which is the original installation, but as the new drive is twice the capacity, I decided to install Windows 7 Professional 64bit and have it dual booting.

So far I've managed to get the job done, but with one little niggle. I get an error showing in Device Manager for the Ethernet Controller. As you can see from the image below, everything else seems to be OK.

HP 225 G2 Ethernet ErrorHP 225 G2 Ethernet Error

I've downloaded all the relevant files from the HP website for Windows 7 64bit, and have installed the Atheros Bluetooth package SP64678 and the Atheros QCA9565 802.11b/g/n WiFi LAN package SP70859. Both Bluetooth and WiFi are working OK, but nothing from the Ethernet connector.

As Device Manager is telling me there's no driver installed, I went in search of something that would work, but having trawled through the HP website and search engines for many many hours, I still haven't managed to find something that works.

Unless I'm being really stupid or blind (which I can be at times), there's nothing on the HP Support portal which addresses this issue for this particular model. I've downloaded all the recommended files from HP for Windows 7 64bit using my laptop serial number to ensure the correct model is selected. But nothing seems to be available which resolves this.

Does anyone know what I can do to get rid of this very annoying error and get the LAN working from the Ethernet port please?

Thanks

Rodger

Hi, Rodger:

As far as I can see from the support page, the driver you need for the ethernet controller is there...

This package provides the Realtek Local Area Network (LAN) Driverthat enables the Realtek Network Interface Card (NIC) Chip insupported notebook models that are running a supported operating system.

That is such an old driver though.  I recommend that you install the latest ethernet driver directly from Realtek.

Download, unzip and run the setup application from the W7 driver at the link below...Under the Windows driver section.

Thanks for the information Paul

Although the Realtek website won't send me the link to the file, I have at least got access to the older file on the HP Website

I did see that file in the list, but I had wrongly assumed that the Atheros drivers would also do the LAN setup - WRONG!

Oh well, I'll see if I can get the LAN driver installed and hopefully all will go well. I just need my daughter to bring the laptop back so I can finish it off 🙂
