I have been trying to locate the correct network adapter driver (the wired network, not wireless, that works fine) for Windows 7 for this laptop.
I've tried the drivers from nVidia (several of the legacy/nForce drivers) but in Device Manager it always says "This device cannot start. (Code 10)" (this is for the "NVIDIA nForce Networking Controller" entry, and likewise it errors the same for the HP ones I've tried.
Here's the list I've already gone through:
HP:
* sp45169.exe (doesn't error but doesn't show up anywhere)
* sp48125.exe (fails "not for your system" - looks like it's Vista-only)
NVidia:
* 15.23_nforce_winvista64_international_whql.exe
* 15.58-nforce-winvista-win7-64bit-international-whql.exe ()
In the device manager, the following info is shown about the adapter:
Hardware IDs:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C&SUBSYS_30CF103C&REV_A2
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C&SUBSYS_30CF103C
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C&CC_020000
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C&CC_0200
Device Instance Path:
PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C&SUBSYS_30CF103C&REV_A2\3&2411E6FE&1&50
Any ideas?

Hi:
This driver should work...
This package provides the driver for the NVIDIA nForce AR Chipset in the supported notebook models and operating systems.
File name: sp37730.exe
Here is a partial copy and paste of the ethernet driver folder setup information file which shows this driver supports that hardware ID.
[Manufacturer]
%Nvidia% = Nvidia,NTamd64
[Nvidia.NTamd64]
%NVENETFD.DeviceDesc% = NVENET65.NDI, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_0450
%NVENETFD.DeviceDesc% = NVENET67.NDI, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_054C

Hi,
Machine is very old. Vista driver should work but please try:
ftp://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp45001-45500/sp45169.exe
Regards.

Thanks very much for the reply, but no dice.
The installation from that file (sp45169.exe) completes and says everything is successful but the device still shows with an exclamation point in the Device Manager (and ) and it does not appear in the Network Connections screen.
I tried in compatibilty mode for Windows Vista and Windows XP SP3 - same deal. After trying a few times the installer did pop up once with an error saying something about a 32-bit uninstaller running on a 64-bit system - but since it's talking about the uninstaller, that doesn't seem related.
Any other ideas?
