Microsoft Windows XP

After replacing the Toshiba HDD on my HP-Mini and replacing its 1GB RAM module with a 2GB module and doing a clean installation of Win XP SP3, the HP does not seem to connect to the Internet.  I have two computers on my desktop but only the HP-Compaq is able to connect to the Internet.  I would like to know if it is possible ( and how to check it) to ascertain whether the Mini's F12 key (which has a WiFi icon on it) is turned on or off.   Being unable to connect to the Internet is a real bummer.   Hoping for some detailed guidance for resolving this problem.  Many thanks to all who will reply.
