So I have this HP Pavilion Gaming laptop(1050 4gb, i7 9750HU or H) and today I was play CS2, when my performance suddenly dropped. I tried multiple games(which i normally average about 190-220fps in) yet my performance was horrendous, about 60fps in each game. I'm so weirded out by this. Does anyone know what could've caused this performance drop?

Hi @conikco2,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

The performance drop in your HP Pavilion Gaming 15 (with an i7-9750H and GTX 1050 4GB) could be due to several factors. Here are a few potential causes and solutions.

Thermal Throttling

  • Cause: Overheating can cause the CPU or GPU to reduce its clock speed to avoid damage, leading to poor performance.
  • Solution: Check the laptop's temperatures while gaming using a tool like HWMonitor or MSI Afterburner. If temperatures are too high (e.g., over 85°C), clean the fans, ensure proper ventilation, and consider applying fresh thermal paste. You can also use a cooling pad to help with airflow.

Power Settings

  • Cause: The laptop may be running on a power-saving mode, which reduces performance to conserve energy.
  • Solution: Ensure that your laptop is plugged in and set to High Performance mode in Windows Power Settings. Also, check in NVIDIA Control Panel that the preferred graphics processor is set to the NVIDIA GPU for high-performance games.

Windows or Driver Updates

  • Cause: A recent Windows or driver update might have caused compatibility issues.
  • Solution: Check for any pending Windows updates and ensure all drivers (especially the NVIDIA GPU and Intel chipset drivers) are up to date. If the performance drop coincided with a driver update, you could try rolling back to a previous version.

Background Applications

  • Cause: Unnecessary applications running in the background can consume CPU, GPU, and RAM, leading to reduced game performance.
  • Solution: Open Task Manager and close any unnecessary programs or services that may be consuming resources.

Malware or Virus

  • Cause: Malware can use system resources and cause performance issues.
  • Solution: Run a full system scan using a reliable antivirus program to rule out any malware or viruses.

NVIDIA GPU Performance Mode

  • Cause: The GPU may not be running at full power due to incorrect settings in the NVIDIA Control Panel.
  • Solution: Open the NVIDIA Control Panel, go to Manage 3D Settings, and ensure that Power Management Mode is set to Prefer Maximum Performance.

Hard Drive or SSD Issues

  • Cause: If your storage drive is nearly full or malfunctioning, it could slow down the system.
  • Solution: Check if your storage is full and try clearing unnecessary files. If the issue persists, check the drive's health using a tool like CrystalDiskInfo.

Battery Issues

  • Cause: If you're gaming on battery power, your laptop may automatically reduce performance to save battery.
  • Solution: Make sure you're connected to power when gaming and that the battery settings are optimized for performance.

Thermal Paste Degradation

  • Cause: Over time, the thermal paste between your CPU/GPU and the heatsink may degrade, causing higher temperatures and thermal throttling.
  • Solution: If you’ve had the laptop for a while, consider replacing the thermal paste.

Next Steps:

  • Check temperatures while gaming to see if overheating is an issue.
  • Update or roll back drivers, especially the GPU drivers.
  • Set power settings to High Performance and ensure the NVIDIA GPU is being used for gaming.
  • Close background programs and check for any malware.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
