Hi @PeteSAFC,

Welcome to the HP Support Community!

Thanks for reaching out!

We're thrilled to have the opportunity to assist you and provide a solution.

I understand your HP Pavilion g6 running Windows 7 shows an orange Wi-Fi light on the F12 key and wireless is not working. Let’s go through a few steps to check what could be causing this.

Use the F12 wireless key

Press the F12 key once.

The light should turn blue/white when Wi-Fi is enabled.

Orange indicates the wireless radio is turned off.

Check Wireless Assistant / HP software

Click Start → Control Panel → HP Wireless Assistant (or HP Connection Manager).

Make sure Wireless LAN is turned On.

The F12 key depends on this HP utility to function correctly.

Enable wireless in Windows Network settings

Go to Control Panel → Network and Sharing Center → Change adapter settings.

Right-click Wireless Network Connection and select Enable if it is disabled.

Check Device Manager for the Wi-Fi adapter

Open Device Manager → Network adapters.

Confirm the wireless adapter is listed with no warning icon.

If disabled, right-click and choose Enable.

Install or reinstall the wireless driver

Download the correct Wi-Fi driver for HP Pavilion g6 and Windows 7.

Install the driver and restart the laptop.

Missing or incorrect drivers prevent the F12 key from working.

Install HP Hotkey Support

Download and install HP Hotkey Support / HP Quick Launch Buttons for Windows 7.

Restart the laptop.

This software controls the F12 wireless function key behavior.

Check BIOS wireless setting

Restart the laptop and press F10 to enter BIOS.

Look for Internal Wireless Device / WLAN and ensure it is Enabled.

Save changes and exit.

I hope this helps.
