Thanks - can you tell me a bit more about the USB wi-fi adapter? Does having one of them mean I don’t need the card and can connect to the WiFi hub?

Is there a specific one I would need?

Hi:

Yes, with a USB wifi adapter, you don't need to be concerned about the ralink wifi card.

It will connect directly to your wireless router.

There are dozens of models to choose from, and no doubt varies depending on what country you live in, etc.

They have models that are very tiny and hardly stick out of the USB port, to rather large ones with external antennas (probably more suitable for a desktop PC).

Ok - thanks. I’ve ordered a USB adapter.

Would you say it’s very likely to be the card that’s not working? And therefore this should solve it?

I am very confident that the Ralink wifi card has an issue, and a USB wifi adapter should solve the problem immediately.

I base that opinion on the fact that you factory reset your notebook and the wifi still didn't work.

Great - thanks.

I'll let you know if it works once i get the adapter (delivered on Friday).

What can cause the cards to go bad?

HP Recommended

Anytime.

It's hard to say...heat generated by the notebook, failure of a delicate circuit on the wifi board.

Usually the card just completely disappears from the device manager when it fails, but not always.

USB adapter arrived today and it's connected fine.

Thanks for all your help

Anytime.

Glad to have been of assistance.

That confirms the Ralink wifi adapter suffered a bizarre hardware failure of some kind.
