HP ProBook 650 G1
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

Hello,

I just upgraded to fiber 1 gigabit speed.  I have 2 questions.

1. On WIFI it cannot connect to my 5 GHz network.  It doesn't even show up.  Only my 2.4 GHz network shows up.

2. When I plug directly into the modem I am only getting about 95 mbps.  Is my computer limited to this speed as the max?  If so is there anything I can upgrade to get the 1 gigabit speed I am paying for?

Hello,

1.) For the 5GHz issue, it very well could be the channel is set to high for your computer to see/ recognize it.

2.) Chances are the ProBook does not support Gigabit speeds via ethernet.

We can try adjusting the ethernet port speeds by going to Device Manager>Network Adapter>Rick click ethernet than select Properties>Advanced Tab>Speed and Duplex. If it is locked into a speed, try changing it to automatic or manually selecting the Gigabit option (if there is one)

Thanks so much.

Pardon the ignorance but what channel do I need to set it to in order to see the 5G on WIFI?  And once I get it on 5G on WIFI what speed should I be expecting?

HP Recommended

The lower the channel, the better. You could select the automatic selection, but it might opt into too high of a channel.

As for the speeds, that will depend on your ISP and the internet package you have.

5GHz networks are going to be faster at close range, and start to dwindle the further you get away.

Hi, @2011Fiveoh

Some HP Probook business notebooks don't come with dual band wifi cards.

What model wifi card does your PC have?

Hint:  if the suffix of the model ends in b/g/n, it is a single band (2.4 GHz) wireless N card.

If the suffix ends in a/b/g/n, or a/g/n, then it is a dual band (2.4/5.0 GHz) wifi card, and should be automatically finding any wireless networks on the 5.0 GHz band.

Thanks.  It is a Qualcomm Atheros QCA9565 802.11b/g/n WiFi Adapter.

What do you recommend me getting?

HP Recommended

You're very welcome.

Yes, that is definitely a single band card.

Here are the cards I recommend...

If you have, or plan to get an AC router...

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7260 802.11 ac 2x2 WiFi + BT 4.0                 HP Part #710661-001

If you only have a dual band wireless N router, and don't plan on replacing it anytime soon...

Intel Dual Band Wireless-N 7260AN 802.11 a/b/g/n 2x2 WiFi + BT4.0    HP Part # 717381-001

Either card is readily available on Amazon or eBay.

Do your search by the HP part number, not the model of the wifi card.

Since your notebook does not currently have an Intel wifi card installed, it is very important that you uninstall the current wifi card and driver in the device manager (and the same for the bluetooth), before installing the replacement wifi card.

If there is atheros bluetooth software in the Programs section of the windows control panel, uninstall that too.
