HP Probook 640 G1
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

My IT department found a Probook 640 G1 laying around so I got a newer laptop.  The 640 G1 did not have bluetooth at all.  The tech put in an HP branded Intel 7260 wireless card that has wifi and bluetooth capabilities.  The wifi was recognized with no problems.  The bluetooth on the other hand was not.  There were no unknown devices with yellow triangles either.  The tech tried for hours and I tried as well with no sucess.  I found a hack online to tape over pin 51 but that didn't work either.  There is no option to enable bluetooth in the BIOS whatsoever.  And I updated to the latest BIOS.

Does anyone have any experience adding bluetooth to a Probook 640 G1?  What magic did you do to get it to work?  Or do you have any other suggestions ?

Thank you for your time.

Hi:

Without any tape on the pins, see if installing the HP Connection Manager software, and restarting the PC allows you to turn on the BT radio using the software.

This package provides the HP Connection Manager for supported notebook models running a supported operating system.

The HP Connection Manager and HP Wireless Assistant (its predecessor) programs have a very nasty feature.

If a device is turned off by using one of these programs, you cannot turn the device on unless you reinstall the program.

The BIOS will show the wireless device present and enabled, and the device manager will show no signs of it.

So, hopefully that will work for you.

Thank you for your suggestion. I had IT install the HP Connection Manager but then an error, "HP connection manager service not installed. The program will now exit." I took the tape off the tape off the pin 51. Still no Bluetooth.

Any other ideas?

You're very welcome.

Unfortunately, I don't.

Bluetooth should have worked.  The connection manager software was from the 640 g1 support page.

I have the 350 G1, and swapped out the broadcom wlan card for the same Intel 7260 with BT and had no issues at all.  PC recogized both the wlan and bt.

Works great on all OS from W7 - W10.

Maybe the BT portion of the card is bad.

IT tried two 7260 cards and the Bluetooth on both was not detected. My friend at the help desk tried for about an hour this morning with no luck. He was pretty much done with my Bluetooth problem. He fixed a separate issue with the wifi, handed the laptop to me, and turned back to his desk. I don't blame him.

The only other thing I can think of is to get a blank hard drive and installing Windows 7 from scratch and seeing if it is recognized. Then that would point the problem to the standard image IT used to install Windows.

Thank you for your help.

You're very welcome.

It must not be the wlan card then if they all do the same thing.

Unfortunately, I don't know what the problem could be then as the HP connection manager software should have gotten any non-appearing BT device to show up.
