This laptop lost wifi so I have reset it three times. First and third times it had me set up the Wi-Fi internet connection successfully then lost it after a restart. It completely uninstalls the driver so it is not visible. This is so frustrating. Why does this happen (rhetorical) and how do I fix it (literally)?

Hi @abbybart,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
It sounds like the Wi-Fi driver on your HP laptop is being removed or not properly reinstalled during system updates or restarts. Here's how to address the issue.
Steps to Fix the Missing Wi-Fi Driver:
Reinstall the Wi-Fi Driver Manually:
- Download from HP Website: Go to the HP support page and download the latest Wi-Fi driver for your laptop model. Make sure it's the correct one for your specific model and Windows version.
- Install the Driver: Once downloaded, run the installer to reinstall the driver.
Disable Automatic Driver Updates:
- Open Group Policy Editor: Press Windows Key + R, type gpedit.msc, and press Enter.
- Navigate to Computer Configuration > Administrative Templates > Windows Components > Windows Update > Do not include drivers with Windows Updates.
- Enable the Policy: Set this to Enabled to stop Windows from automatically updating drivers during system updates.
Roll Back to a Previous Driver (if available):
- Open Device Manager (Windows Key + X, then click Device Manager).
- Locate your Wi-Fi adapter under Network Adapters.
- Right-click and choose Properties, go to the Driver tab, and click Roll Back Driver (if available).
Run Network Troubleshooter:
- Open Settings (Windows Key + I), go to Network & Internet > Status.
- Click on Network Troubleshooter to see if it can detect and fix the issue automatically.
Reset Network Settings:
- Open Settings, go to Network & Internet > Advanced network settings.
- Select Network reset, and follow the prompts. This will reinstall all network drivers.
BIOS/UEFI Update:
- Check if there's a BIOS update for your laptop on the HP support page. Sometimes, BIOS updates fix hardware compatibility issues, including Wi-Fi problems.
Once you reinstall the driver, keep an eye on future Windows updates to ensure they don't remove it again. If the issue persists, you could disable driver updates permanently or manually install drivers after each update.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
