How do I hardwire my HP Notebook - 17 to the internet?  Cannot get WiFi connection due to location of PC and Router/modem. There is no cat5 cable port so must connect with an adapter.  I have 500m and if I am lucky I can get 100m  I have a cat 5 cable with an adapter connected to the PC.  The internet provider's technician get 500m at the modem, at the cat 5 terminal in my office and through the cat 5 cable that connects to the PC. somewhere between the cat 5 cable the USB adapter and the PC I am losing 400m os internet speed.  Also I have tried three different types of adapters

The most obvious thing is the cable type.  CAT 5 ethernet cable supports just 100 mb/s and has a maximum length of 100 meters (328 ft.). You should be using CAT5e (enhanced) cable that supports 1 gb/s at 100 meters max length. You should also consider the usb port. A usb 2.0 port supports up to 480 mb/s speeds. A usb 3.0/3.1 supports up to 5 gb/s.

If you have to run cable farther than the 100 meters then you might need to look into an ethernet extender (PoE extender). I don't have any experience with them. You can use the ping command to see if there are issues with a long cable run. Open up a cmd prompt:

> ping < your router> ; probably 192.168.1.1

Packet loss should ideally be 0; Round trip times should be very low (expressed in milliseconds); icmp_seq should be in order 0,1,2,3,4 (not out of sequence).
