A 100-base-T adapter for USB 2.0 will run essentially the same as one on any other modern bus.

A 1000-base-T (aka, GigE) adapter for USB 2.0 will be limited by the speed of the USB port. USB 2.0 supports a media rate of 480Mb/s in one direction at a time, while GigE supports a media rate of 1000 Mb/s in both directions. So it is significantly faster than USB 2.0, and if you’re pushing it, you’ll find such an adapter is limited by USB. Of course, GigE will also be limited by PCI/33MHz as well… it’s just that fast.

A 1000-base-T adapter for USB 3.1 will run as expected. USB 3.1 Gen 1 (aka USB 3.0) has a media performance of 5000Mb/s in both directions. USB 3.1 Gen 2 does that at 10000Mb/s in each direction.

Now, of course, this all assumes that your media adapter is well designed. It’s certainly possible to make a janky Ethernet adapter for any bus. But this is pretty standard stuff these days… I suspect most work as expected.

Thanks for your specifications on the speed. So I went for a USB C3.1 network adapter. Also you are right that amazon is much cheaper than all specialised retailers on the internet. As I live in the Netherlands I went for Amazon.de adapters up from € 6, I choose one of € 11.-  Best Iris
