How do I connect to the Internet using an Ethernet connection?

I received this device as a gift.  On my quest for help with connecting via Ethernet, I have been referred from chat to HP CS.  From HP CS to Smart Friend Service, (who charges a "nominal" undeterminable fee) who referred me back to HP CS, who referred me to www.support.hp.com.  And here I am, with no help whatsoever as of yet.  Which is why I ditched HP years ago.  Good products but CS sucks.  That being said, I need to know how to connect via Ethernet.  So far I've been told that requires extra software.  What?  Why doesn't your Chromebook recognize an Ethernet adapter like virtually all the other devices with a USB port do? This is ridiculous.
