Microsoft Windows 11

My laptop isn't connecting on the Wi-Fi 6E 6 GHz band. One person has discovered that Dell disabled the 6 GHz band on their laptop. How can I find out if HP has disabled this feature?

@Shanester, Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cr1000 (755C1AV) supports Wi-Fi 6E, you may refer to this document - HP ENVY 17.3 inch Laptop PC 17-cr1000 series specifications | HP® Support

To check if Windows recognizes the 6 GHz band:

Run this command in Command Prompt:

netsh wlan show drivers

Look for:

  • Radio types supported: should include 802.11ax
  • 6GHz supported: Should say Yes.

Enable Wi-Fi 6E in Windows Settings:

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi.
  • Select Manage known networks.
  • Choose your network and click Properties.
  • Ensure the network band is set to 6 GHz.

Check BIOS Settings
Sometimes, the 6 GHz band can be disabled in the BIOS. Restart your laptop and enter the BIOS setup (usually by pressing F10 during startup). Look for Wi-Fi settings and ensure the 6 GHz band is enabled.

Sorry for the delay in responding, and thanks for the specifications.

When I run the command (below) it shows the 802.11ax radio type and 6 GHz band supported.

netsh wlan show drivers

When I go into Settings > Network & internet > Properties, I can see the currant band as 5 GHz. There isn't an option to change it.

I don't see any Wi-Fi options in BIOS. I uploaded a picture to OneDrive.

I'm not sure what else I can try.

@Shanester, Thank you for your response,

Please try these steps,

6 GHz Requires WPA3 Security

Make sure your router is broadcasting a 6 GHz network and that:

  • WPA3 encryption is enabled on the 6 GHz band (6E does not support WPA2)
  • The SSID is unique (not the same name as your 2.4 or 5 GHz network)
  • Your PC and router are on the same country/regional setting
(mismatched country codes can block 6 GHz SSID visibility)

Manually Connect to a 6 GHz SSID

Sometimes Windows doesn’t auto-discover the 6 GHz band. Try:

  • Go to Settings > Network & Internet > Wi-Fi > Manage Known Networks > Add Network
  • Manually input your 6 GHz SSID, choose WPA3-Personal, and enter your password

Check Router Compatibility

Not all routers handle 6 GHz reliably, especially in tri-band setups. On your router:

  • Make sure 6 GHz is enabled and broadcasting
  • Update the router firmware
  • Reboot both the router and PC

>>Update Intel & HP Drivers

I hope this helps!

If my response resolves your issue, please click “Accepted Solution” to help others find the answer. Also, don’t forget to click the “Yes” button to say thanks!

Take care and have a great day.

My router is set to WPA3-PSK.

The SSID is unique.

The laptop and the router are both set to Canada.

I tried manually connecting, but it didn't work.

The router has 6 GHz enabled and the radio is on.

I rebooted both the laptop and the access point.

I downloaded the latest driver from HP, then an even more recent driver from Intel.

If there is anything else I can try, please let me know.

The Windows Event Log has several different sections. If the wireless adaptor/driver is generating error messages, will they appear in a particular section of the log (Application, Security, Setup, etc.)? Or could error messages appear anywhere?

Thanks,
Shane.
