Hp windows notebook - wireless not working and wireless adapter missing.

Hello

I am running windows 8.1 on a hp pavillion 14 notebook. Where the wireless icon should be is a computer with a red x over it. However when i go to the network and sharing center and then to adapter settings the wireless adapter icon is nowhere to be found. Ive tried rebooting several times to no avail.
