Hi:
Since you are asking that question, your notebook is one of the 90% that do not have the optional and expensive WWAN adapter that actually connects to the cellular service.
All the SIM card does is to authorize you to use your carrier's cellular network.
All 840 G5's have a SIM card slot.
Go to the device manager. Click to expand the network adapters device manager category.
You must see one of these WWAN adapters listed there or the SIM card is useless.
Huawei HP lt4132, LTE/HSPA+ w/GPS
Fibocom Intel XMM 7360 LTE-Advanced
The parts list for your notebook does not indicate that either of these devices were included in your notebook.

Yes, the SIM card will not do anything.
Your screenshot shows that your notebook does not have the WWAN hardware installed.
The only way you will be able to use the SIM card would be if you first open up the notebook, check to make sure the two WWAN antenna wires are present where the WWAN card would have been installed.
Here is the service manual link:

If your notebook has the two WWAN antenna wires, then you would have to find, buy and install one of the supported WWAN adapters listed in chapter 3 of the service manual.
WWAN module
LTE CAT4: Huawei HP lt4132, LTE/HSPA+ w/GPS HP part # 845710-003
LTE CAT9: Fibocom Intel XMM 7360 LTE-Advanced HP part # L15398-001
These are the only two WWAN cards that will work in your notebook, and you must buy one that has the HP part number on it.
