My wifi has not been working for about a month now, and I am getting very frustrated. I saw somewhere that you should uninstall the device and reconnect the adapter to reinstall it. When I uninstalled it and reconnected it, it did not detect the adapter at all.
I have a hp pavilion dv7-4083cl.
Please help.

You did not do your homework: checking available drivers before upgrade.
and Intel did not write drivers for Windows 10
https://downloadcenter.intel.com/product/59480/Intel-Centrino-Wireless-N-1000-Single-Band
Now, please try
(a) Totally remove wireless driver,
(b) Download the latest driver from Intel above then install to your computer.
Hope this helps.
Regards.

Problem is, my computer doesn't even display the adapter in the device manager. I tried installing the latest drivers a week ago and I uninstalled the device. Now, even after disconnecting and reconnecting it, it won't show up.
I'm thinking about buying a Windows 10 compatible wireless adapter, but I don't know which ones would be compatible with my laptop.
If you could help me try to restore the adapter to the device manager or find a new wireless adapter, I would greatly appreciate it.

Your machine has an Intel Centrino Wireless-N 1000 802.11 b/g/n (1x2) WLAN module. Parts list
http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=WQ638UA
It came with Windows 7 pre-installed

It was built around mid-2010 therefore the chance to upgrade wireless card is none due to the whitelist. Option
