ProBook 4540s
Microsoft Windows 10 (32-bit)

Working on a ProBook for a friend. This is a x64 system, but running x86 Windows (recent if not latest version). It has an internal WiFi card Ralink RT3290 (bgn) that does no longer show up in Windows device manager and in Ubuntu. I tried two different cards of compatible format but different make and model, all have the same problem. I update Bios, but even there the Wifi card does not show up as peripheral. If I plug in a USB Wifi card, windows finds it and I can access Internet without any problem.

So: It is not a Windows / driver problem; It is not a HW problem in the card. Must be a problem in the motherboard ...

I tried but failed to run HP Support Assistent. Most recent version fails to install without error message, but the log shows it is not finding some components. Earlier version tel me that they are not compatible with the x86 version of Windows. Apparently, HP dropped all support for these machines. Some ppl had success with reseating their card, but after 4 card swaps, that didn't happen for me. So this otherwise perfectly working laptop should be scrapped ? (NB. in the near future, we will have a lot less opportunity to just throw away hardware and buy new. Energy is running out and w/o energy there is no steel, alu, plastic, let alone chips and such. Time to start salvaging !)

This happened to me and this may work for you.

I went in to the BIOS and "LOAD BIOS DEFAULTS" and Save

Reboot

I was going crazy.. Nothing worked. I even restored from a previous system image and it still wasnt there.

Tried that as well, no joy.
