Pavilion Notebook and HP Envy
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I have two HP notebooks - an Envy and a Pavilion. Both are less than three years old and both are running Windows 10.

They connect via Wifi to the router without issue and there is internet access. However every now and then (starting a few months back) one of them thinks the router no longer has internet access and instead of the Wifi symbol in the Taskbar I get a globe symbol. Its still possible to communicate with the router but the notebook is convinced there is no internet access there.

This doesn't happen at the same time on both computers. The Envy is slightly worse and does this several times a day. The Pavilion can go hours or even the whole day without this happening or it can occur several times in one morning.

If I disconnect either notebooks from the router and then reconnect again everything works fine ... until the next time.

I also have other devices (an iphone and a Samsung Galaxy phone) that don't do this and the connection works fine constantly - I tried running BBC radio via the phones for several hours just to check this..

I've tried two separate routers and on both tried the full reset (switching everything off, turning the router on and then the laptops) which works for a while and then the issue starts again.

I've also double checked all the drivers are up to date and updates in HP Support Assistant are up to date.

Can't think what else to try .....

@link2light_SEO Welcome to HP Community!

I understand that the internet is not connecting for your laptop.

Do not worry. I will try to fix the issue.

For starters please try these steps out.

  • Please try to connect to the internet using a different Ethernet cable.
  • Please check if there is a light that flashes at regular intervals on the Ethernet port where the cable is plugged in.
  • Try to go online and check if it works. If it does not,
  • Try to connect to a wireless network if it is possible.

Please follow all the prescribed steps in this document: http://support.hp.com/us-en/document/c04649156

Also check this link out: http://h20564.www2.hp.com/hpsc/doc/public/display?docId=emr_na-c01096008

Please update the BIOS and check for the issue.

let me know how that pans out,

And the answer to the above question will help me, help you!

Keep me posted, and if any of the above questionnaires helped resolve the issue,

The "globe" icon is something I've noticed if DNS didn't process correctly. To get it to go away (assuming the Internet is actually working) then you can restart your "Network Location Awareness" service in "Services" for it to reconfirm all is working on the WLAN. If that doesn't clear it up, I'd reset DNS cache on the devices (cmd -> ipconfig /flushdns) and see if that clears things up.

@Praveen196

I appreciate your post but these kind of cut and paste responses don't really help especially if they send you off to a link which basically suggests resetting your computer!

@Tfannon - thanks for the constructive reponse

Well I wasn't able to reset the Network Location Awareness (kept getting a 1061 error) but I could flush the DNS.

The Envy never (recently) accepted the router had internet access when it was first switched on every day so after flushing the DNS I ran the Windows Network Troubleshooter which said it found an issue and had resolved it. The Envy does now connect believe the Router has internet access from the moment it is switched on.

I'll flush the DNS of the Paviion later and see if that helps. However, as sometimes happens, the Pavilion has been good as gold all day today so will need a few days to see if it has really helped.
