Got an HP envy laptop, it's one with the 4060 and i9 13900h, after my Asus Zephyrus' keyboard and track pad were acting wonky, and less than a year later, my HP laptop flat out died.

I tried powering it on, and the button lit up, but none of the fans spun up, and then it immediately went black. No display, no keyboard light, nothing. Then, I press the power button again, still no fans spinning, but the caps lock key turns on, then shuts down. It doesn't blink, just turns on.

At first, I thought it was a battery issue, because Windows modern standby could be **bleep**. But even after charging it with the original charger it still didn't work. The same issue, power on, no fans or display, and then turns off. Power on, caps lock key lights up, then immediately shuts off. I've contacted HP support, they can't figure out what's wrong, and the amount of time it'll take for them to get it fixed is on the order of months.

The strange thing is, my dad has an HP envy 2 in 1 for several years, and it's still kicking after years. Yet my laptop didn't work after less than 9 months.

Hi @ornaldo7,

Welcome to The HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

I understand your HP Envy 16 is experiencing a hardware failure, possibly related to the motherboard or power delivery.

Here's what you can try before pursuing a lengthy repair process:

Steps to Try:

Power Drain:

  • Disconnect the charger and remove all external devices (USBs, etc.).
  • Hold the power button down for at least 30 seconds to fully drain any residual power.
  • Plug the charger back in and try to power on the laptop.

Hard Reset:

  • If the laptop has a removable battery, remove it, disconnect the charger, and press the power button for 15-20 seconds. Reconnect the charger (without the battery) and try powering it on.
  • If the battery is not removable, just hold the power button for 15-20 seconds with the charger disconnected, then reconnect the charger and power it on.

Reset RAM/Check RAM:

  • If you're comfortable opening the laptop, try reseating the RAM. Sometimes a loose connection can cause issues.
  • Remove the RAM sticks, clean the contacts gently, and reseat them securely.

Check for Signs of Life:

  • Check for any signs of life, like fan spin-ups, beeps, or blinking LEDs. The behavior of the caps lock light turning on briefly may indicate a diagnostic code. Count the blinks (if any) or check HP’s troubleshooting guide for beep/blink codes.

Disconnecting Internal Battery:

  • If opening the laptop is an option, you could try disconnecting the internal battery (if not removable) for a few minutes, then reconnecting it. This helps reset the power cycle more effectively.

BIOS Recovery:

  • If the system isn’t powering on, but the caps lock light is turning on, there might be a chance to attempt a BIOS recovery:
    • Turn off the laptop.
    • Hold the Windows + B keys and then press the power button.
    • Release the power button while continuing to hold Windows + B until the BIOS recovery screen appears (if it does).

External Display:

  • Try connecting an external monitor to see if the issue is with the laptop’s display.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
