Spectre x360 15-CH000
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

I just got a new Spectre x360 running Win10 Pro.  The wifi seems very sluggish.  My wifi router (a new Medialink MLWR-AC1200) is in my office, about 6' away from the laptop.  Running speedtest.net, I typically get speeds from 7Mbps up to occasionally 30-40Mbps.  The speed starts out slow and gradually crawls its way up to the final result.  By comparison, if I run speedtest.net on my phone (Galaxy S8) sitting next to the laptop and connecting to the same server, it connects more quickly, and the speed instantly jumps to 60+Mbps.  (Which is the rated speed of my Internet connection.)  My old iPad 4 is a bit slower (35-45 Mbps) but it's still much faster than the Spectre.

I have applied all Windows-recommended updates.  The wifi adapter was running an older driver -- 20.50.1.1 or something similar -- and I updated it to the HP-recommended 20.60.0.7.  No noticeable difference.  Help?

Hi

Can you WinKey + R and type msinfo32

line 9 is the SKU:    as there are several dozen model matches for CH000.

HP Recommended

Hi

This is not model dependent...

Copy, Paste and Save in Notepad, as LBB.bat and double click to run.
Post anything non-personal, but relevant please.

@ECHO OFF

PowerShell -Command "Get-NetAdapter"
PowerShell -Command "Get-NetAdapter -Name * | Format-Table -View Driver"
PAUSE
PowerShell -Command "GIP -Detailed"
PAUSE
PowerShell -Command "Test-NetConnection"

PAUSE

The underlines part is quite important.

HP Recommended

Yes, I wouldn't expect it to be model dependent -- I would think all the Spectre x360 15 models use the same wifi hardware.

msinfo32 SKU is 2FW62AV.

Not sure why it showed such a long ping time.  I pinged 13.107.4.52 and got times in the 20ms range.

Hi

PartSurfer (http://partsurfer.hp.com/Search.aspx?searchText=2FW62AV) says you have a

921061-856ASSY WLAN 11AC 2X2 INT 8265D2W NV SD

fitted in your  HP Spectre x360 - 15t-ch000 CTO

The install says

Intel(R) Dual Band Wireless-AC 8265 12 Up 48-A4-72-45-B3-5C 52 Mbps

So the correct WiFi adapter is there, but the connection speed is pretty low.

This must be the Driver installed?  File name:    sp87786.exe

Mine is  Realtek RTL8723BE 802.11 bgn Wi-Fi A...      23 Up           48-48-48-48-48-27      72.2 Mbps

So are you connecting to a 2.4 Ghz frequency or the faster 5.0 Ghz?

Either way it's wrong.

My ping for WiFi from the UK

RemoteAddress          : 13.107.4.52
SourceAddress          : 192.168.0.11
PingReplyDetails (RTT) : 17 ms

Best Ethernet  Minimum = 12ms, Maximum = 19ms, Average = 15ms

Are your DNS servers the optimum?

Hopefully something helpful later.

So you have differing networks for differing devices.

WiFi is on a 10 network.

Desktop on a 192 network.

Router is a 192 network?

So just to check what you are connecting to...

Copy and Paste into Notepad,
Save as A2Z.bat
Double click to run.

It is specifically X, Y and Z and it may/should show your WiFi name and passphrase.

So don't post them.

Just to check if it is your 2.4Ghz or 5.0ghz by the name you specified.

HP Recommended

This must be the Driver installed?  File name:    sp87786.exe

Yes.  That's the current driver from the Spectre download page, version 20.60.0.7.

So are you connecting to a 2.4 Ghz frequency or the faster 5.0 Ghz?

I tried both.  Both were about the same.

Huh.  I just tried again this morning, and both are getting around 60 Mbps!?  I don't think anything has changed since yesterday.  I've been getting the slow speeds ever since I got the new laptop three weeks ago, and suddenly this morning, pow!  60 Mbps.  Hm.

There are other strong wifi signals in the area, but none within 2 channels  on 2.4Ghz.  There is one signal on the same channel on 5Ghz, but I'm getting 60Mbps this morning on 5GHz in spite of that.  My router is actually set to a different 5GHz channel -- not sure why it's ignoring that setting and parking on the same channel as my neighbor.  It seems to only accept two different 5GHz channels, regardless of how you set it.  But now I only have a fairly weak signal competing on 5GHz.

My ping for WiFi from the UK

Best Ethernet  Minimum = 12ms, Maximum = 19ms, Average = 15ms

I get just about the same.  I don't know why the Powershell script got such a bad ping time the first time I ran it.  If I run it again, the script sees ping times around 15-20ms.

Are your DNS servers the optimum?

Maybe not the fastest they could be, but DNS isn't going to affect wifi speeds, especially from speedtest.net.  They're not doing a DNS lookup during their download test.

So you have differing networks for differing devices.

WiFi is on a 10 network.

Desktop on a 192 network.

Router is a 192 network?

The 10-net is my local physical router and wifi.  The 192 network is just used for VMware virtual network adapters.  They're not involved in normal network connections.

Hi

So the jigsaw puzzle you have created is not that bad a picture to help piece things together.

I am at a loss as to what else there maybe to do.

WiFi Interference.pngNetwork PolyGlot.png

I would suggest inSSIDer, but I think you already run something similar.

HP Recommended

Yes, I use inSSIDer on my iPad but they don't seem to support Android any more.  I use a wifi analyzer app that is very similar.

I had a hidden grayed-out entry for a USB adapter I inserted once (now deleted) and a few Microsoft virtual adapters.  Transmit power already set to 5.  No conflicts.

Since it suddenly started working fine, without any changes to the laptop, apparently there is something external that is causing the problem.  Maybe I was getting excessive interference from my neighbors' hotspots -- I had not thought to check that before yesterday.  But even when it started working well, my nearest/loudest neighbor was still right on top of my signal, so... who knows.  I guess we chalk this one up to mystery gremlins and hope they don't come back.

Thanks much for all your help!

Gary
