ProBook 640 G2
Microsoft Windows 7 (64-bit)

I have a ProBook 640 G2 which worked perfectly a few days ago.   To re-purpose it for use with an older PLC, I re-imaged it to a fresh Windows 7 64 Bit OS.  As I have done in the past, I put the serial number in the HP support site, downloaded the available drivers to a USB, and installed.   Everything works beautifully except for the NIC.  I have neither wired nor wireless ethernet, which are required for this application.  Under Device Manager, the only network adapter showing is Bluetooth.  Under "Other Devices", Ethernet Controller, Network Controller, and PCI Simple Communications Controller all appear with a yellow triangle with an exclamation point.   Under "Driver Software Installation" the same devices have a red X with "No Driver Found".  I have tried every driver listed in the support site, need some help in finding the right driver to get my NIC working again.   Thanks !

You're very welcome.

I had edited my post above and included the correct Intel ethernet driver, so you can either use that one or the one from Intel.

For the wifi, you need this driver...or you can use the latest one from Intel

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp100001-100500/sp100026.exe

The IMEI driver...the only suggestion I can offer, would be to see if installing an older version works.

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp82001-82500/sp82472.exe

The contents of the driver setup information file shows support for that hardware ID.

You may want to try manually installing the driver if the auto install method doesn't work.

Hi:

These should be the drivers you need...

PCI Simple Communications Controller:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp99001-99500/sp99409.exe

Ethernet:

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp98501-99000/sp98585.exe

There can be one of several different model wifi adapters HP could have installed in your notebook.

Please post the hardware ID for the Network Controller device, so I can figure out what driver it needs.

Use this guide to find that information.

https://www.howtogeek.com/193798/how-to-find-drivers-for-unknown-devices-in-the-device-manager/

If the other drivers I posted don't work for some reason, please post the hardware ID's for those devices too.

Thank you for replying so quickly!

I had previously installed the Realtek driver 74518, so I ran it again, uninstalled, and then re-installed.

The PCI Controller driver, aka Intel Management Engine Driver, returns an error when trying to install:   "The Procedure entry point SetDefaultDllDirectories could not be located in the dynamic link library KERNEL32.dll"   In the instructions for installing the driver, it says to uninstall the fingerprint reader first from Control Panel, but I checked and that was not installed.

As far as the wiFi identification, under Network Controller Properties/details/Hardware ids/Value = PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_095A&SUBSYS_50108086&REV_61.   A Google search of that string returned

Intel Dual Band Wireless-AC 7265

Under Ethernet Controller it showed PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_156F&SUBSYS_80FD103C&REV_21 which Google says is

Intel Ethernet Connection 1219-LM

I found driver applications for both of these for Windows 7 on the Intel web site, but will wait for your advice before installing

Under PCI Simple Comm Con, HID = PCI\VEN_8086&DEV_9D3A&SUBSYS_80FD103C&REV_21 - Google confirms Intel Management Engine Interface as you indicated in your initial response -

So - thoughts on the error I received, and advice on the Intel wi-Fi drivers ?   Thanks again !!

Brilliant !   Interesting to note that the INTEL driver for the wired Ethernet worked perfectly, but their WiFi driver tool failed to run properly, even after I went to the INTEL support site via the wired connection, had it auto-detect hardware, and confirmed the correct driver package.  Got the same "kernel32" error I saw previously.

The HP wifi driver that you supplied the link for, however, worked perfectly, so I now have both wired and wireless network connectivity, and can proceed with my project.

You are a gentleman and a scholar.  Thank you very much !!
