I have an older HP Laptop DV1000 & the ethernet NIC stoped working. When I try to reinstall it, the Found New Hardware Wizard gives me this error message: Cannot Install the Hardware. The system can not find the file specified.
I tried uninstalling & reinstalling from the Hardware Manager with the same result. And I tried installing previous (older) versions of the driver that are already on the latptop with the same result.
The NIC is a REALtek RTL8139/810X, my OS is WIN XP PRO (32 bit)
Is there a way to fix, or am I going to need to replace the NIC. If I must replace it, where would I look for 1, what's the preferred replacement, etc..
I'd appreciate any help. Thanks

You're very welcome.
I'm surprised the HP driver didn't work, but glad the last one I posted did.
It must be that your notebook has the older PCI NIC, which is why the other Realtek driver didn't work. That one is for the newer PCI express NICs.

Try the ethernet driver directly from Realtek.
Download, unzip and run the setup application from the 2nd file listed at the link below.

Oops.
Use the 4th driver on the list...
If that one doesn't work, try this one instead...3rd one on the list.

Hi, When I tried to use the 4th one I rec'd a message "REALtec Ethernet controller was not found"
When I installed the last one that you suggested... IT WORKED..!
Thank You... Thank You... Thank You... Thank You..!
In fact it is working better now than it has in a Very Long Time 🙂
