Hi @Sdg10 ,

Welcome to HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.

If your HP ENVY 17.3 Inch Laptop is experiencing issues with the network adapter and is displaying a message that the external adapter cannot be linked or verified, you can try the following steps to troubleshoot and resolve the issue:

Check Physical Connections:

  • Ensure that the network cable (if using a wired connection) is securely connected to both the laptop and the network outlet or router.
  • If you are using a wireless connection, make sure the wireless switch on the laptop is turned on.

Restart the Laptop:

  • Sometimes, a simple restart can resolve connectivity issues. Restart your laptop and check if the network adapter starts working.

Update Network Adapter Drivers:

  • Outdated or corrupted network adapter drivers can cause connection problems. Visit the HP support website or use the Device Manager to check for and install the latest drivers for your network adapter.

Check for Airplane Mode:

  • Make sure that the laptop is not in Airplane Mode, as this disables all wireless communication.

Run Network Troubleshooter:

  • Use the built-in Windows Network Troubleshooter to automatically diagnose and fix common networking problems. You can find this by right-clicking on the network icon in the system tray and selecting "Troubleshoot problems."

Disable and Enable the Network Adapter:

  • In the Device Manager, locate your network adapter, right-click on it, and choose "Disable." After a few seconds, right-click again and choose "Enable."

Check for Software Conflicts:

  • Some third-party security software or firewalls may interfere with network connectivity. Temporarily disable such software to check if they are the cause of the problem.

Reset TCP/IP Stack:

  • Open a Command Prompt as an administrator and type the following commands:

netsh winsock reset
netsh int ip reset

Check for Windows Updates:

  • Ensure that your operating system is up-to-date by checking for and installing Windows updates.

System Restore:

  • If the issue started recently, you might consider using System Restore to revert your system to a point where the network adapter was functioning correctly.

Hardware Check:

  • If none of the above steps resolve the issue, there might be a hardware problem with the network adapter.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have a good day.
