My old Pavilion f105 laptop only has 'n' WiFi, so has my router had 'ac' capability I plugged in a Netgear 'ac' nano-adaptor and this gave me 533Mb consistently.

My new Pavilion cn0504sa has 'ac' WiFi built-in, yet when used in exactly the same location only gives me 433Mb at most (sometimes less). Even when put almost right next to the router the result is the same.

Any thoughts on why this might be the case please? I would have have expected that, with a larger built-in aerial, the new laptop would have at least matched the speed of the Netgear plug-in adaptor even if not exceeded it.

In the meantime....

Out of curiosity, I inserted the Netgear 'ac' USB adapter from my old latop into my new laptop. When this was connected to my WiFi it consistently gave faster transfers than the inbuilt adapter. This is ridiculous!

I don't want to carry on using the plug-in adapter as it takes up one of the USB-A ports and the other is already used by the adapter for my wireless mouse, so that leaves only the USB-C port spare - and all my peripherals (eg DVR drive etc) need a USB-A port  😞
