This is a long standing problem and I've tried many things to fix it without success. When I switch on my laptop it connects to my wireless modem no problem but says I don't have internet access. When I go through the process of doing a restart - it fixes the problem.

The problem is my laptop and not the router as I experience the same problem with 3 different routers in different places.

Please can anyone help me as this 2 stage start up is such a nuisance and takes longer to use my laptop every time I use it

AWESOME its worked and fixed the problem. I had uodated the Network Adapter before and it didn't fux it.

Maybe the later update was needed.

Whatever, thank you for taking time to answer my question and your expertise

Have you tried to update the Wireless driver?

Hold Win key and tap R, run will come up. Type devmgmt.msc and hit enter, device manager should come up. Go to Network Adapters and hit the > icon next to it and right click your wireless adapter (Most likely an Intel(R) Dual Band) and select "Update Driver Software..." Make sure you're connected to network, and it should pull an update. Give it time to download and install, and I recommend rebooting after it installs. Should hopefully fix issue! If keeps up let me know

Oh no I spoke too soon.

The next time I switched my laptop on it was back to it's problem. Connects to my router but no internet access until I do a restart and then it's fine.

Any other ideas?

Sure, let's try something else.

Ok, let's see if it's power save.

Hold down the Windows key and tap X, a little menu from bottom left should appear. Click Network Connections. Here you should see 2-3 different adapters, Ethernet (Which should say not connected), Wi-Fi (Which should be connected) and Bluetooth (Which you may or maynot have, depending if your machine has it). Right Click on WiFi and select Properties at the bottom of the list. Now click Configure... on the upper right side, and select the last tab "Power Management". Uncheck the Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power option and select OK. Use the computer as normal, and reboot when you're done.

If the problem persists, there's one other thing we can try. Hold down the Windows key again, and tap X, then tap A. It may prompt you if you want to allow the app to run, hit yes. It will open up Command Prompt with Admin rights. You should see a black screen with C:\windows\system32> and a blinking underline. Type in netsh int ip reset c:\resetlog.txt then hit enter. You shoud see a few lines of text, each one ending in OK. You may receive Resetting , failed. Access is Denied at the end, but that shouldn't matter, as long as the rest of the lines said OK. Now, reboot right after this as it will prompt you to reboot.

Hopefully these will fix your problem, let me know to see what other options we have to do.

Hi Kirblarz - thanks again for offering solutions but unfortinately neither has worked. I did uncheck the power save without success.

Then the command prompt I tried but it came up with a message saying "the message is not recognised as an internal or external command or operable program or batch file"

Maybe I can help you by sharing what message I get when I do a start up - it says :-

"One or more protocols are missing on this computer" and when I hover over this message it says "Windows sockets registry required for network connectivity are missing". I've followed through the "try these repairs as administrator" but it doesn't solve the problem.

So I simply do a restart and heh presto - it fixes whatever the problem is but such a pain to have to do this 2 step process with 3 different routers!.

ANy other ideas to try?

Regards Sue

I am having the same problem, however, my wireless driver has completely disappeared on startup. When I restart, it's back with no further action on my part. I have tried the above suggestions with no luck. When I try the reset, I get the message,"filename, directory, or syntax is incorrect".  Any more suggestions?

Sure! That error message is actually very helpful. Let's try a simple reset of the WinSocket it's saying is missing.

Hold down the Windows Key, tap X and then A. This should open up Command Prompt with Admin rights. Next, type netsh winsock reset and hit enter. It will say "Sucessfully reset the Winsock Catalog. You must restart the computer in order to complete the reset."

For a bit of extra security, do the following as well:
netsh int ip reset

ipconfig /release

ipconfig /renew

ipconfig /flushdns

Reboot the machine and it should fix the issue. If this still doesn't work please let me know, the last step involved working in the registry and that's always last step, and it's the longest and requires a little more attention.

When you say the wireless driver has completely disappeared, do you mean you aren't able to connect to wifi, as in the icon is missing or what?

Hi Kirblarz

Thanks again for your expertise. I've followed through all your 5 steps and am having some mixed outcomes.

I thought it had fixed it as I tried start up twice and it worked perfectly. Then the next 3 occasions it was back to it's old tricks again until I did the restart.

Then the next time I tried it I didn't even connect to my router at all and had to manually connect - despite the automatically connect button being ticked.

Now my laptop has just done a Windows update and when it started it connected to my router just fine. I'm going to monitor what happens the next day and will come back to update my post to let you know the latest.

Such a pain!
