Need some advise on opening emails.  Frustration is running high!  For the past several weeks I have not be been able to open emails on a consistant basis.  That is, some will open and some will not.  No doubt, I have probably caused the issue.  Any help would be appreciated.

Welcome to the HP Community --

Sounds maddening.

The thing is, though, that opening emails has more to do with your Operating System / version (guessing Windows in this instance) and the program / application / software method you are using to access your email account.

For example,

You might be using your browser to sign into your email provider and use that provider's "email page".

Trouble spots in this case include the browser security settings .  What?  Browser security is not generally something that breaks when it was working before -- That said, if not done, check for your browser security, browser version / update, and email settings

What else?

If your are using an installed program / client software to access email, the setup used in that client software can (should) be checked.

Example installed programs / client software:  Microsoft 365 Outlook, Mozilla Thunderbird

What to check - examples

  • The connection setup used to retrieve emails (when the program is opened) - Open and run / retrieve emails to check
  • Server settings as available in the software -- Thunderbird, for example, can use IMAP as a better alternative to POP

What else?

Some email providers are tightening security for third party apps.

Third party apps are those applications or programs that might be used in-between your email provider and how you are accessing your email messages.

For example,

If you are using a program on your computer other than your browser or installed email software,

(then)

Your email provider might require that you switch on 2-Step verification and create an App Password for use with the program that is trying to access your email.  An App Password is used in place of the regular password you would use to access your email account.  In many cases, this is more to do with sending emails than receiving them but the concept of secure transmissions (2-step verification) might apply.

What else?

If you are using the Windows Mail Application,

If not yet done,

Open the Windows Mail app,

Consider switching on option (in the upper right) to use the "New Outlook"
