Projecting display as extended screen

I have a smart TV and I have no issues with connecting to it wirelessly. I can mirror the screen without any issue. However I cannot get it to Extend the laptop screen. All other casting functions seem to work fine. If I select extend display the TV will show my desktop only, and the laptop will work as normal, pull up windows, apps, etc. But the TV display does not change.

I understand that you would like to extend the display.

Configure the display with Windows

Extend or duplicate the desktop with a second monitor.

1. Right-click anywhere on the desktop, and then click Display settings (Windows 10) or Screen Resolution (Windows 8).

2. Make sure the correct number of monitors displays.

   Windows 10

   

   Windows 8

   

   • If all of your monitors display, continue with these steps.

     NOTE: 

     Two monitors might display as one, with 1|2 in the center, indicating the same screen duplicated on two monitors. To change to an extended desktop display, continue with these steps.

   • If not all of your monitors display, make sure the cables are securely inserted, and then click Detect.

Thank you for the response. However following the instructions changed nothing. I can wirelessly connect. Only the inactive desktop will display on the other monitor. And the laptop has an active display. It doesnt seem to make any difference as to how I arrange screen 1 or 2. I can project the laptop screen to the other monitor without issue, but I cannot extend the display. I welcome more suggestions.

Please let us know when was working before.

Please run the SFC scan. you can refer to this Link: https://support.microsoft.com/en-in/help/4026529/windows-10-using-system-file-checker

Try updating the computer, this will install the latest updates -

Step 1 Windows Updates -

1) In the search box, type, and open Windows Updates.

2) Check for updates.

3) If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Step 2 Install updates using HP Support Assistant

1. In the search box, type, and open HP Support Assistant. 
2. Check for updates. 
3. If the updates are available, click on install and restart the computer.

Honestly, I dont know if it ever worked in the past. I tried your recommendations and I can get 2 separate desktops to show in the 'extend ' setting, but I cannot actually "extend" the view of the primary screen. I can't help but think I'm just not setting something correctly, but it is not obvious to me.

OK, I just figured it out,,,,why this is not shown in a instruction somewhere IDK. I must connect and select extend screen. No problem, but in order for the display to be extended to the next monitor, you must exit full screen "make a window" on the main screen you wish to extend. Then drag or "resize" the window to extend it to both screens. Probably something most users take for granted that everyone should know. I didn't.
