I have an HP Notebook -17 - ca1021cy, and need to find out what type of RJ45 Adapter I need to purchase. I am trying to hardwire my laptop to my router and have an ethernet cable, but the RJ45 Adapter I purchased is too small to fit in the port of my laptop.

You're very welcome.
If your notebook is like one of my HP notebooks, the RJ-45 port looks like it won't fit the ethernet cable.
But the plastic piece that is partially covering the port is actually a flap that you gently press down to expose the whole RJ-45 port.
I had no clue what was going on when I couldn't plug the ethernet cable into the PC.

Hi:
According to the specs, your notebook already comes with a RJ-45 ethernet port.
HP Notebook - 17-ca1021cy Product Specifications | HP® Customer Support
External ports | 2 USB 3.1 Gen 1 Type-A (Data Transfer Only); 1 USB 2.0 Type-A (Data Transfer Only); 1 RJ-45; 1 AC smart pin; 1 HDMI; 1 headphone/microphone combo |
Unless the specs are wrong all you need to do is to plug the ethernet cable into the port.

I'm using the following adapters for my machines
https://www.amazon.com.au/Anker-Aluminum-Portable-Gigabit-Ethernet/dp/B00PC07T02
And I've got few more USB-3 ports. You can buy 4,5,6 or 7 ports or w/o USB-3 port.
Regards.

Thank you - yes, I do see the RJ45 ethernet port but I wanted to find out what type of adapter is needed so I can connect the ethernet cable to it. I purchased a USB-C to RJ45 and that one won't fit into the port on my laptop.

Thanks, that worked! I actually saw the flap and on my first couple attempts, I could not get the ethernet cable to connect. So I thought I would need to purchase an adapter. I just tried again and looks like I was viewing it from an incorrect angle, because on this try it connected properly. Thanks again for your help!!

Anytime.
Glad to have been of assistance.
I don't know why HP installed that flap.
It must be some of kind of protector to prevent something from getting inside the port and cause damage to the pins?
It does its job too well, IMHO. 😊
