Hi, I have a 64 bit Windows 7 laptop, that uses the Ralink RT5390 wireless adapter. I'm pretty sure this adapter only supports 2.4 GHz, but I am wondering what are my options for upgrading it ? Is this something I need to buy a whole new laptop for? Or is there an internal or USB device that I can use to make it pick up the 5.0 band ?
I ask because right now, my 100mbps up/down FiOS is only showing 30mbps on my old laptop, new laptop, and cell phone on the 2.4 network. But on my new laptop and cell phone I'm able to switch to the 5.0 network (different Wifi names for the 2.4 and 5.0) and I receive 80-110 mbps.
I want to modify the old laptop to receive the 5.0 band somehow, and thus to receive the 80-110 mbps connection.
Thank you in advance!

Hi,
Depending how USB wireless card vendors implement their products. I don't have money to buy them all to test and 3 of my oder laptops (HP Elitebook 2740p, Dell Latitude E6400 and E6420) are all have ac internal adapter.
Regards.

Hi,
What is your Pavilion G ? Please use the following instructions to find out the model/product of your machine:

Note: if it was built before April 2014 then the chance to upgrade wireless card is very slim to none. If you wish, you can use USB wireless adatper with ac standard.
Regards.

It is an HP Pavilion g6 Notebook PC, product number LW259UA#ABA.
Yes, I actually bought this summer 2011. It's had a good run, but I've been trying to get another year or two out of it.
You're saying that if it was built pre-2014, that I can use a USB wireless adatper with ac standard ?
