HP ENVY x360 15z-ee100
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Since I got the laptop, the Wi-Fi signal has been very poor while roughly 15ft away from wireless router (Linksys AC5400) with only a false wall in the way. All my other electronics that are much older get full strength signal. I have taken every troubleshooting step short of uninstalling and reinstalling the OS. The wireless network card passes all the hardware and software tests, but yet the Wi-Fi signal I receive on the laptop is one bar, maybe two- only briefly. To get full signal strength, I must be at a measured distance of 7ft. I reached out to HP support and aside from the troubleshooting, they can only offer to have my laptop sent in to get analyzed. Unfortunately, I am a full time student and I cant afford to be down without my computer 10+ days. Is there a recommendation or self help advice that would help me with this problematic wireless network card?

Hi:

The only non-invasive suggestion I can offer would be to install the latest driver HP has for that model wifi adapter.

It may be that one of the antenna wires was never connected (or became detached) to the card at the assembly plant which could be a reason for why the reception is so poor.

And the only way to find that out would be to open up the notebook and check for such a circumstance.

Here is the link to the latest driver and the release notes for what the driver does...

https://ftp.hp.com/pub/softpaq/sp121001-121500/sp121426.exe

Description:

This package contains the driver installation package for the Realtek RTL8188EE, RTL8723BE, RTL8723DE, RTL8821CE, RTL8822BE, RTL8822CE, and RTL8852AE wireless LAN Controller in the supported computer models running a supported Windows 10 or Windows 10 Cloud operating system.

Fix and enhancements:

- Fixes an issue where the network band option is not displayed in the Mobile hotspot page of the Settings menu when the previous driver version is installed. (RTL8852AE)
- Fixes an issue which causes Wi-Fi throughput to degrade when the system is not close to the Access Point. (RTL8852AE)
- Fixes an issue which causes Miracast to disconnect after the Access Point (AP) bandwidth or channel are changed. (RTL8852AE)
- Fixes an issue which causes Wi-Fi performance to degrade when an Access Point (AP) scan is triggered. (RTL8822CE/RTL8821CE)
