I just bought an EliteBook 840 G5 and the sim tray isn't opening, can anyone help with this.

Not all HP 840 G5 machines have WWAN option. Did you buy WWAN option for your machine ? Machines without WWAN option the SIM card slot is blocked with a plastic plug and sadly it is a non-removable plug inserted into the slot (as mentioned on page 7 of the manual).

 

Full text:  NOTE:All models have a SIM card slot and icon, but models that do not have the HP Mobile Broadband Module, a wireless wide area network (WWAN) device, installed at the factory are shipped with a non-removable plug inserted into the slot.
