I just lost my wifi connection and had to restart my computer to reconnect. I guess it's not fixed but it doesn't seem to be happening as often. I'm about 60+ feet from the Netgear N600 router. The extender is about 25' away from me.
I guess I'll disable the n mode as you suggested next and will probably go this afternoon to get a new usb wireless adapter too. maybe also the new router..haha. I have until Friday to request a return authorization from HP for my new all-in-one.

@ DOC_ ME
Are you in a situation where you can access the router and its configuration page?
I know some users are in their own homes where they can change the router configuration and other users may be in school dorm room situations where they can't make any changes to the router configuration or replace the router itself.
If you're in a place where you can replace the router or change the router settings, I would suggest doing that. You can try changing the router Mode to G Only. If possible, I would recommend just upgrading the router. That seems to be the best solution so far. If you've got any other questions, just ask 🙂

I have come across some threads in the past couple of days where users have suggested and confirmed drivers from the following website are resolving their issues.
I would suggest installing version 5.0.23.0 from the top section under the Windows 8 column. Let me know what results you get from that 🙂
Holy crap that site rocks. Doesn't even appear to be Ralink. I installed the same driver from that site that was installed on my computer already and wow it worked. Connection working a hundred fold. I usaully would not suggest downloading drivers from anywhere besides HP if they have them, but man that worked. I have a Dv7 7212nr and a Ralink 3290. Dufferent specs than this post, but it worked and it helped a BUNCH.

Hello,
I have the same problem with Ralink rt5390: in the room where the router is, everything is fine; when i move in another room the connection drops to 3-4 bars (when on 3 bars it doesn't work at all). I've contacted HP/Compaq support for my country (Italy), they suggested me to install the latest drivers (done, no change), then they sent me a spare wireless adapter (exact same model), it didn't work either.
Plus, i tried to change the version of the drivers installed again but it seems I can't: it always says I have version 5.0.25 installed when installation is succesful, otherwise it says "drivers are damaged or missing" and adapter doesn't work at all.
I've read many threads about the issue, here on HP support forum as well, I can't seem to find a solution.
There's only one thing (apart from Ralink adapter being crap) that i can think of: every video, guide or suggestion shows 2 cables for the antennas connected to the card, while my laptop (Compaq CQ58) has only 1 connected...
My guess is the other cable is inside, but i can't get it unless i open the laptop (probably voiding my warranty).
Can this be the problem?

You will not void your warranty, the wifi adapter sits just under the plastic panel on the bottom. Post your model number and someone smarter than I will post a link to your 'owner's manuel' that will have details on accessing the wifi card.
If only one is attached and there are supposed to be 2, I imagine that would lower your range a lot.
Otherwise, I found the ralink is just a very limited card with limited range. Before returning my laptop and getting an Envy 17t I sound upgrading my router helped a lot.

Thank you for the answer 🙂
What I meant is I can access the wifi card (i even changed it with the other one support sent me), but if there is a second antenna cable it has to be inside where I can not reach without opening the whole laptop.
But from what I saw in the videos the aux cable is usually attached to the main cable, so my guess is that this laptop has no aux antenna cable at all...
So, the only way to solve this issue is to buy a new router...What if I buy a different wifi card? Does it have to be compatible with the model, or anyone will work with the proper drivers?
