A WIFI 6 client use protocol 6 AX when my laptop is very close to the router (Xfinty XFi) as expected but, further away from the router the intel 200ax client connects at protocol 5 AC speeds. Why does my laptop change from wireless AX to AC when my laptop is further away from the router?

Thank you for posting on HP Support Community.
Don't worry as I'll be glad to help, to provide an accurate resolution, I need a few more details:
- Have you tried connecting your laptop to a different wifi network?
Firstly, perform Windows Update and HP Support Assistant: (do not skip any troubleshooting steps if you feel steps are repeating)
To check for updates now, select the Start button, and then go to Settings > Update & security > Windows Update, and select Check for updates.
Install updates from HP Support Assistant: Go to Download HP Support Assistant to install the tool.
- To open HP Support Assistant, double-click the HP Support Assistant icon
. - Click My devices in the top menu, and then click Updates in the My PC or My notebook pane.
- Click Check for updates and messages to scan for new updates.
- Review the list of updates. Updates with a yellow information icon are recommended. Updates with a blue information icon are optional.
- Click the update name for a description, version number, and file size.
- Select the box next to any updates you want to install, and then click Download and install.
And, also run BIOS Update: Follow steps from the link: https://support.hp.com/in-en/document/c00042629
Hope this helps! Keep me posted for further assistance.
Please click “Accept as Solution” if you feel my post solved your issue, it will help others find the solution.

I ran windows updates yesterday and there was one update that I downloaded and installed on my laptop. I followed the onscreen instructions to reboot my laptop after install. I then followed the instructions to update my BIOS, but windows said that I have the current BIOS. Even though I ran widows updates my laptop still is connecting to my Xfinity Xfi gateway using protocol 5 AC instead of protocol 6 AX when my laptop is further from my router. However, today I needed to disconnect my Wi-Fi. In order to get my laptop to connect using wireless 6 AX very close to the router. I moved my laptop further away from the router and my laptop is connecting using protocol 5 AC. I verify what protocol is being used by going to system network and internet, Wi-Fi, SSID properties. I don't have another wireless network to test the laptop on.

My environment also has a Wifi extender that I forgot about it is a Xfinty wireless AX extender. I powered off the extender and sure enough my laptop that is faraway from the router is using protocol 6 AX. I powered up the extender and bam my laptop is back to protocol 5 AC.
