Hi
I hope someone can help, please...
A couple of weeks ago this laptop refused to acknowledge my router or my mobile, which I sometimes tether it to. The message I'm getting is "The DNS Server isn't responding". I thought it may be a problem with the network card, but someone who knows far more about hardware than me has suggested:
"Could be an old laptop and the Sky routers are changing from 5.8GHz to 2.4GHz, but modern Sky should have both. Getting a wireless USB adapter should solve the problem."
Has anyone had a similar problem and know if this is the correct solution, please?
Regards
Phil

Hi @PJB59,
Welcome to HP Support Community.
Thank you for posting your query, I will be glad to help you.
If you're encountering a "DNS Server isn't responding" error on your HP Pavilion Notebook, it typically indicates an issue with your internet connection or DNS settings. Here are some steps you can take to troubleshoot and resolve this issue.
Restart Your Router and Modem: Sometimes, the problem can be with your network equipment. Try unplugging your router and modem from the power source, wait for about 30 seconds, and then plug them back in. Allow them to fully restart before checking your internet connection.
Check Network Cable or Wi-Fi Connection: Ensure that your network cable (if you're using a wired connection) is securely connected, or if you're using Wi-Fi, make sure you are connected to the correct network.
Use a Different Device: Check if the issue is isolated to your HP Pavilion Notebook. If other devices can connect to the internet without issues, the problem may be specific to your laptop.
Restart Your Computer: Sometimes, a simple restart of your computer can resolve network-related issues.
Flush DNS Cache: To clear the DNS cache on your computer, open a Command Prompt with administrative privileges and type the following command
ipconfig /flushdns
Then, press Enter. This will clear the DNS resolver cache.
Change DNS Servers: You can try using different DNS servers to see if that resolves the issue. You can use public DNS servers like Google DNS (8.8.8.8 and 8.8.4.4) or Cloudflare DNS (1.1.1.1 and 1.0.0.1). Here's how to change your DNS settings in Windows:
- Right-click on the network icon in the system tray and select "Open Network & Internet settings."
- Click on "Change adapter options."
- Right-click on your network connection and select "Properties."
- Select "Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4)" and click "Properties."
- Choose "Use the following DNS server addresses" and enter the preferred and alternate DNS server addresses.
Check Firewall and Security Software: Your firewall or security software may be blocking your internet connection. Temporarily disable them to see if it resolves the issue. If it does, you may need to adjust the settings in your security software to allow internet access.
Update Network Drivers: Make sure your network adapter drivers are up to date. Visit the HP support website, enter your laptop's model, and download the latest network drivers.
Reset Network Settings: If none of the above solutions work, you can try resetting your network settings. In Windows, you can do this by going to "Settings" > "Network & Internet" > "Status" > "Network reset." Follow the on-screen instructions, but be aware that this will remove all your network settings, so you'll need to set them up again.
By following these steps, you should be able to diagnose and hopefully resolve the "DNS Server isn't responding" error on your HP Pavilion Notebook.
I hope this helps.
Take care and have a good day.
