Hi @Bee738340,

Welcome to the HP Support Community.

Thank you for posting your query. I will be glad to help you.

Thank you for reaching out. I'll be glad to help troubleshoot this. To make sure I'm providing the correct steps for your specific HP system, could you please provide:

  • Full HP model number (for example: HP EliteBook 840 G10, HP ZBook Fury 16 G11, HP Spectre x360, etc.)
  • Windows version (Windows 10 or Windows 11)
  • Are you connecting through:
    • An HP Thunderbolt Dock
    • An HP Thunderbolt 4 Dock G6
    • A Thunderbolt-to-Ethernet adapter
    • Another Thunderbolt device
  • What exactly happens?
    • No network connection at all?
    • Ethernet adapter missing from Device Manager?
    • Shows "Connected" but no internet?
    • Works intermittently?

While waiting for the model, please check these items:

1. Open Device ManagerNetwork adapters.

    • Do you see an Ethernet adapter listed?
    • Any yellow exclamation marks?

2. Open Thunderbolt Control Center (if installed).

    • Confirm the dock/adapter is detected and authorized.

3. Test the Ethernet cable directly with another device.

    • This quickly confirms whether the cable and network port are working.

4. Disconnect the Thunderbolt device, wait 20 seconds, then reconnect it. HP documents this as a common fix when Thunderbolt devices are not enumerated correctly after connection.

5. Check for:

    • HP BIOS updates
    • Thunderbolt firmware updates
    • Dock firmware updates
    • Network driver updates from the HP support page for your exact model. HP and HP Community reports show Ethernet connectivity through Thunderbolt docks can be affected by BIOS, dock firmware, or network driver versions.

6. If using an HP Thunderbolt Dock:

    • Disconnect the dock from the notebook.
    • Remove dock power for 5 seconds.
    • Reconnect the power and reconnect the notebook. HP documents this as the dock hardware reset procedure.

Once you provide the exact HP model and the Thunderbolt device/dock model, I'll check the HP documentation specific to that product and guide you through the correct troubleshooting path without missing any model-specific steps.

I hope this helps.

Take care and have an amazing day!

I'm an HP Employee.
