HP Pavilion dv6t-7000 CTO
Microsoft Windows 10 (64-bit)

Laptop originally had Windows 7.  Upgraded to Windows 10 a year ago and no problemss until the anniversary update.  Winded up with a crash and had to have Windows 10 reinstalled.

Since then, have been having problems connecting with wi-fi.  On start-up, icon in the task bar may show that there is a connection, but when I go to a website, there is no connection and the icon will change to the ! with the yellow triangle.  Have tried in "manage network settings" to forget and reconnect.  Sometimes that works.  More often, not.  Tried unchecking the connect automatically and then rechecking.  Sometimes that works, more often not.

Rolled back the driver.  That worked for 2 startups, then couldn't connect at all.  Updated the driver back to the most recent, and it stopped working after 1 startup, so updated again and it is working AT THE MOMENT, but I'm sure that will change the next time I have to start up.

So, the most recent wi-fi adaper is:  Ralink RT 5390R 802.11 b/ g/ n 1x1

Driver date:  05/18/15

Driver version:  5.0.57.0

FYI - other devices (including another laptop) are able to connect, so the router and modem are not the issue.

I have unchecked the "Allow the computer to turn off this device to save power"

Any suggestions?   Have tried running both trouble shooting and HP Support assistant - neither can identify the problem.

I hope a supervisor at HP sees this.

You suggested:

      Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
Click Use the following DNS server address.
Fill in the DNS server info for your ISP.

When I followed those instructions, I told you that my settings already had all zeroes in it.

Come to find out that all zeroes are not a valid setting.  You should have known that.

So, on a whim, I went back to the Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4) properties, and instead I chose "Obtain DNS server address automatically."

Guess what?  It works.  I fixed in by doing the OPPOSITE of what you suggested.

Hi! @HelpmyPavilion, Welcome to HP forums.

I understand that you have wireless issues with your laptop after upgrading to windows 10.

Don't worry I will try to help you out.

Kudos to you for trying out the steps before reaching out to us.

Please try the steps mentioned below.

Change DNS settings.
Open Control Panel.
Click Network and Internet.
Open Network and Sharing Center.
Click Change Adapter Settings.
Click the connection you want to configure.
Click change the settings of this connection.
Scroll down to Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
Double-click Internet Protocol Version 4 (TCP/IPv4).
Click Use the following DNS server address.
Fill in the DNS server info for your ISP.
Click OK and close all windows.

If the issue still persists try installing Intel driver autodetect on your PC and install the latest driver.

Let me know if this helps!

Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂

1)  You did not specify how to find this information.  That option is currently selected and the numbers in it are all zeroes.

2)  At times, I need to use a VPN - wouldn't filling in the DNS interfere with the VPN?

@HelpmyPavilion, thanks for the response.

Thanks for trying out the steps.

As you mentioned you are unable to find the DNS address for your PC.

Please try the steps mentioned below.

1. Click the Start button, type "cmd" in the Search box at the bottom of the Start menu and press "Enter" to launch the Command Prompt tool.

2. Type "ipconfig /all" and press "Enter" to view the Internet Protocol configuration.

3. Locate the "DNS Servers" line. The IP addresses of the DNS servers are listed on and under this line.

I'll watch your reply!

Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂

You didn't answer my question about the VPN.

DNS servers line is 0.0.0.0

When I enter this, I get the message "The DNS server 0.0.0.0 is not a valid IP address.

The Intel site you linked to for updates only has graphics drivers updates.

The situation is now worse that before - can't connect AT ALL (am borrowing a computer at the moment which is the only way I can reply to this thread).  Now, rolling back or updating the driver does not work.  Wi-fi is showing that I am connected, but I cannot get to any website.

Thanks for trying out the steps.

As I Mentioned in my previous post to get the DNS server address you have to go to command prompt run as administrator and type ipconfig /all this should list the windows IP configuration.

Type the DNS server listed. If the issue still persists contact your ISP (internet service provider) and get the DNS details.

Please refer the picture attached for more information.

As I stated before, I DID THAT AND THE DNS SERVER ADDRESS GIVEN WAS 0.0.0.0

DON'T YOU READ THE POST BEFORE YOU ANSWER IT???????????

The pic you posted is so small it is just a blob, so that's not helpful at all.

Is there someone else KNOWLEDGABLE who can help.

I was considering contacting and paying for HP support, but if you are any indication of what HP support is like, that is NOT going to happen now.

There are a LOT of other threads about difficulty connecting to the internet after the Win 10 anniversarry update and HP is turning a blind eye to this problem!!!!

@HelpmyPavilion, Thanks for the response.

Thanks for trying out the steps.

I was unable to understand whether you got the DNS address from TCP/IP screen or from the command line.

Since you had not specified it correctly in your post, I had to provide you the steps to find the DNS address.

However, I also told you to contact your Internet service provider to get the DNS address did you contact them?

Please try the steps mentioned below.

Open the command prompt with administrator rights and type the following commands.

netsh int ip delete dns "Local Area Connection" all
netsh int ip set dns "Local Area Connection" dhcp

The above commands should clear out any set DNS servers and revert to the one provided via DHCP.

I'll watch your reply!

Have a pleasant day ahead! 🙂
