My HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC is very slow on wifi while my Sony Vaio is fast? I changed to a Fibre Internet connection with a potential speed of 72Mbps. Neither computer could acheive much more that 30Mbps on WiFi.
After a lot of effort and questions my internet supplier sent me a new Router and my old Sony Vaio now connected on WiFi with a speed of 60 plus Mbps on WiFi. But my HP ENVY 17 Notebook PC is still only around 20 Mbps and mostly less than that.
It appears that while the Router is set to provide g and n, that the HP is only using the g speed - the WiFi adapter says it is bgn. I do not find any setting on the driver to force it to use the n speed option.
Any suggestions on how to improve the HP's WiFi speed would be appreciated. HP support appears to have no soluion

Thank you for the reply
My Ethernet connection delivers 60 plus Mbps - only the WiFi is slow even though the WiFi connection status shows 72Mbps
You are probably correct that I just have to accept that the HP Envy has poor WiFi and that a much older Sony Vaio manages to do better - moral of that is probably do not buy HP next time a I need a computer
Thanks for the help

Hi
I assume you have a Router with 2.4 and 5.0 Ghz. The speed capabilities are different.
In the convoluted picture there is a Transmit Power option, also on there may be an Advanced Tab with the ability to be Auto or "b" or "g" or "bgn"
So what frequency are the items using?
This short script is to gather information on some parts of your system
OS, Networking Hardware and Software etc.
Copy and paste the section between the ~~~~ lines, into NotePad.
Save as CF4.bat somewhere easily accessible. Double click to Run

@ECHO OFF
PowerShell -Command "Get-NetAdapter"
PowerShell -Command "Get-NetAdapter -Name * | Format-Table -View Driver"
PowerShell -Command "GIP -Detailed"
PowerShell -Command "Test-NetConnection"
PAUSE

The output may look something like this...

Let me explain
Until I recently changed the router, I assumed that the WiFi speed could not be better than about 30Mbps at best. But when my router needed changing, while the replacement was being delivered my internet service provider gave me a data allowance for my phone and explained how to tether my phone and computer. As a result of the tethering I found that the HP was capable of WiFi speeds exceeding 60 and near to 70 Mbps, and once connected that the new router. it also gave me better WiFi speed (also around 60 plus) on my old Sony Vaio computer.
When while tethered to my phone the WiFi speed is over 60 Mbps on my HP computer, and my old Sony Vaio can also achieve 60 plus Mbps on WiFi from the router, why then is the HP computer not able to do better than 30Mbps and is mostly around 20 Mbps when on WiFi from the router?
The HP only achieves speeds around 60 plus Mbps when connected to the router via a LAN / Ethernet cable

Thank you for looking and for your time which is appreciated
HP Customer Service through the HP Facebook page so far cannot explain either.
Strange that an older computer, the Sony Vaio is a Intel Generation 3 processor as opposed to the HP Envy being generation 5, works better than the newer HP Envy.
A similar issue exists with a video streaning program I have, on the Sony it works, on the HP it stutters for want of a better description.

Thank you for the reply and chart which is appreciated
According to update checks and HP Support I have the latest driver for WiFi, but HP Support have no solution to why the WiFi speed is slow
The WiFi Adpater Status shows that the connection speed is 72Mbps
But using Speedtest.net the fastest WiFi speed acheived is not better than 25Mbps and generally around 20Mbps
The locatin of the the HP and Sony computer in relation to the Router are the same when I compare the WiFi Speed of the two
I have tried changing the Router to proive only the n option but that makes no difference to when it is set to b/g/n or g/n
The router is set to 20Mhz but that makes no difference to having it set to 20/40Mhz
Using a LAN connection the speed is better than 60Mbps
